The Museum was first established in 1977 and was housed in a small room next to the city's
synagogue. Due to its continuous expansion, twenty years later, the Museum moved to the
center of Athens which is a 6 minute walk from the Syntagma metro station.
It had objects salvaged from WW II, as well as artifacts, documents and manuscripts of
the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection expanded with rare books and
publications, textiles, jewelry, domestic and religious artifacts, thanks to the interest
of several individuals and contributions from all the communities of Greece.
The Museum's collections include more than eight thousand original artifacts, testifying
to more than four centuries of Jewish life in Greece.
It also houses a library with approximately 3,500 titles, classified in 31 categories.
It is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:30, Sundays from 10:00 to 14:00, and is closed
on Saturdays.
