Whatsup guys? Shizno here. And today we are going to talk about the Elder Scrolls lore.
This is the first episode in my Elder Scrolls lore series and so today we are going to look
at the Elder Scrolls series from the geographical standpoint. Lets get started!
The Elder Scrolls games are set on a planet called Nirn. The planet is said to have been
created by a divine called Lorkhan, who used the energy and power of other divines, or
Aedra as they are called, during the creation. It is not known weather all of the other divines
were willingly giving up their energy or weather Lorkhan tricked them into it, but the majority
of them abandoned the project before it was finished. Those that did not abandon the project
became the Eight Divines, later joined by Talos, who became the Ninth Divine. Nirn is
orbited by two moons called Secunda and Masser. Masser, which is the larger moon, orbits directly
around the planet Nirn, but Secunda orbits around Masser, rather than Nirn. This leads
some to believe, that Masser is also a planet. Nirn has 4 majore continents called: Tamriel,
Akavir, Atmora and Yokuda. Not much is known about Akavir, Atmora and Yokuda. Yokuda was
appearantly nearly destroyed during a catastrophic event. Not much is know about what happened
or why it happened, but some of the people who lived there managed to escape and settled
in Tamriel. They are known as the Redguars. This seems to be the only map showing Yokuda
to the west of Tamriel. Atmore is an extremly cold region north of Tamriel, from which the
Nords of Skyrim hail. Akavir, is simmilar in size to Tamriel. It was inhabited by four
very different races that were refered to as the Akaviri. Not much is known about the
geography of Akavir, because very few dared to cross the 4 200 miles of ocean. Mostly
because the Akaviri and the people of Tamriel have almost always lead wars with one another.
Tamriel is the one continent that the Elder Scrolls series takes place on and is geographically
the most diverse one. It features grass lands as well as icy areas, deserts, swamps, rainforests,
a large volcano and a group of islands called the Summerset Islands. Tamriel is 12 million
squar miles big and consists of 9 provinces. Each of these provinces are a homeland of
one of the major playable races of the series.
-Elsweyr, homeland of the Khajiit, lies in the southern coast of Tamriel. It is contains
harsh badlands and dry plains to the north and sub-tropical zone in the south.
-Cyrodiil, homeland of the Imperial, lies in the center of Tamriel. It was the setting
for TES IV: Oblivion. -Black Marsh, homeland of the Argonians, is a swampy region to the
southeast. Argonians thrive in this wet place thanks to their underwater breathing abblities.
-Hammerfell, homeland of the Redguards, is dominated by the Alik'r desert. It lies in
the west of Tamriel and has been slightly explored in TES II: Daggerfall.
-High Rock, homeland of the Bretons and the Orcs, is a coastal reagion in northwestern
Tamriel. It has also been partially explored in TES II: Daggerfall.
-Morrowind, homeland of the Dark Elves, lies in the northeast of Tamriel. It consists of
a mainland and a large island called Vvardenfell, which was the setting for TES III: Morrowind.
-Skyrim, homeland of the Nords, is a mountainous region covered by snow. It is the setting
for TES V: Skyrim. -Summerset Isles, homeland of the High Elves,
is a region composed of two islands. The Abecean Sea separates it from the rest of Tamriel.
-Valenwood, homeland of the Wood Elves, is densly forested sub-tropical region, that
forms southwest coast of Tamriel.
One thing to note is that in the Elder Scrolls univers planets and plains are one and the
same. When the divines gained self-awarness, the strongest ones carved out their own personal
space in the universe, forming the individual planes. The Eight Divines who contributed
to the creation of the mortal plane Nirn are now bound to their home planes and Lorkhans
physical body became the actual planet Nirn. The other eight planes surround Nirn and appear
to the mortal brains as sphirical bodies called planets. The rest of the planes, existing outside
of the eight planes, are called the planes of Oblivion. These have no real connection
to the mortal world. The mortals cannot see or detect the planes of Oblivion and thus
only see infinite darkness, but the planes can be reached through Oblivion gates in TES
IV: Oblivion. Each plane of Oblivion is ruled by a Daedric Lord and take a form reflecting
the personality of its lord. Stars are supposedly holes punched through the planes of Oblivion,
that allow magic to pass from the outer realm to the mortal one.
