NARRATOR: Eupolous was a man who wanted to be remembered
alongside Apollo and the Gods
as the greatest boxer ever known.
(punching sounds)
(distant echoing boom)

NARRATOR: He quickly became an Olympic champion
A hero in Thessaly.
People worshipped Eupolous
but showered with glory and riches he became arrogant and selfish.
The beginning of the next Olympiad was announced.
The people were hungry for glory.
Eupolous was certain he could not lose. He guaranteed them a victory.
Upon seeing his rivals
Eupolous realised that he had become complacent
that he might return to Thessaly disgraced.
A desperate Euplous mulled over his fate
then he was struck by an idea.
Eupolous sent messages to his opponents
in which he alluded to his withdrawal from the games.
He requested their presence to pay his respects
and fortune to them in the upcoming Olympics.
Upon their arrival Eupolous revealed his true intensions.
(coins bouncing and rolling)
NARRATOR: He was no closer to winning than he was to poverty.
Eupolous wanted the three to lose for him.
Agetor was an honest man who refused the bribe.
but upon a thought of his wife and child
Agetor's pride diminished.
He took the money and sacrificed his pride to care for his family.
Eupolous was one step closer to cementing his legacy.
One by one the boxers fall.
Eupolous showed no mercy in his fraudulent victory.
Eupolous was victorious.
He believed he would stand in history forever alongside the Gods.
Agetor felt that he had betrayed the Gods.
He proclaimed Eupolous a liar.
Eupolous' ambition was in tatters.
His deception was placed on this vase
forever immortalising Eupolous as the
first Olympic cheat.
