Hello, I'm Jared, and welcome to "Fun Science Demos".
I have a little friend with me here today, a little rabbit,"Hey, get back here!" I think he's
excited about what we're gonna be talking about because the big idea is
energy. How did this little guy get the energy to move?
Well, inside he has three batteries that make him move.
Those batteries give them energy. Where do we get
our energy from? I know what you're thinking. We get it from food.
But let's think about this. Where does the food
get its energy from? So we've changed our set up to show you
how plants get that energy. Through science
we've discovered that plants get their energy from the sun.
The sun gives us heat and light and plants have the neat ability to take
that light
and store it as energy in its leaves, in its
fruit and its roots. And when living things eat that plant,
we get the energy from that plant and it allows us to move and allows our heart to
beat and allows us to think.
Just like that rabbit, our energy doesn't come from batteries,
it comes from the sun. Notice I said that
almost all living things get their energy from the sun. Well,
right here off the coast of South America,
in the 1970's scientists discovered this community of life
that lives really, really deep in the ocean. It's so deep the sunlight can get
to it.
And they- that community of life- doesn't get its energy from the sun
because there is no sunlight.
It actually gets its energy from the heat of the earth.
Now that's pretty cool. Do you know, scientists have a really neat name for how plants
take that energy from the sun and store it. It's called photosynthesis.
I know it sounds complicated but when you break it apart it's actually pretty
simple.
Photo means "light" and synthesis
