Hello, my name is Marcus Schlueter, with the Innovation Studio.
A Book in Moodle is a collection of pages that are organized with a table of contents.
To add a book to your course, “Turn editing on.”
Then, click the “Add an activity or resource” link, in the appropriate section of your course.
This will bring up a list of all of the activities and resources that are available to you.
A Book is a Resource, so scroll down to Resources, find the “radio button” for Book, and click it.
Additional information about Books will be featured to the right of this pop up.
Next, click “Add”
Give the Book a required name.
You can format your chapter using numbers, bullets, indentation, or no formatting.
For the purposes of this tutorial, let’s use indentation.
Let’s also check the “Custom titles” box
Using this, we can add Heading 2 tags to these Titles so that they are more accessible.
Down below, you’ll find additional options, such as the ability to hide a Book until you’re ready for students to find it.
Also, you can set dates for your book to be available. When all of this is filled out to your liking, click save and display.
You can now begin writing the first chapter of your Book, giving it a chapter title,
and adding your content. Let’s change this into a Heading 2
Headings are not just tools to better organize chapter content,
they are also integral to a screen reader experience, for students with sight impairments.
Next click the “Save changes” button.
Your table of contents will appear in the upper left corner.
The pencil icon allows you to go back in and edit,
the red “X” allows you to delete the chapter,
the eye allows you to show or hide the chapter, and the orange plus sign allows you to add another chapter. Let’s click the orange plus sign.
To add a Subchapter, be sure to check the box in this screen.
“Save your changes”
Notice how the Subchapter is indented, because I selected the Indentation format earlier.
Use the breadcrumb trail to navigate back to your main course page.
You’ll see your Book has been added to the course, and you can click the link to update it with new chapters and content as needed.
