A moment of silence, for our dear friend, the penny
Starting on February 4th, the Canadian government has pulled the penny from circulation
that means that stores will not be giving pennies out
and banks will be taking them back.
to be melted down for... whatever you do with old coins.
It actually costs more money to make the penny than one penny.
Which, you know, makes sense.
But the penny has become part of our culture and part of our language
So, this is my memorial to pennies.
We use the penny for a lot of idioms, for example:
"A penny saved is a penny earned."
This means that you should save your money and it will help you in the future.
"I don't know if I should buy that latte or not. What do you think?"
"Well, a penny saved is a penny earned."
Another example is, " a pretty penny."
If something costs a pretty penny, that means it costs a lot of money.
"Wow, that must have cost you a pretty penny.
And the third example is, "A penny for your thoughts."
This is what you do if somebody seems upset or disturbed by something and you want to know what's going on.
You can say, "A penny for your thoughts."
"Hey... hey what's wrong man? A penny for your thoughts? What's up?"
And the penny disappears from stores, wallets,
and pockets, and couches, and the ground, and fountains
but it will live on forever in our language and in our hearts.
Hey guys, what do you think of pennies?
Useful and historical? Or a waste of space and time?
