Creating a mentally healthy workplace is everyone's responsibility.
From leaders to managers to employees, each group has a specific role to play so that
change can take place. And while everyone has a role, change must
start at the top. For leaders, it's critical that they drive
policies to promote mental health in the workplace and positively influence the culture, management
practices and the employee experience. It's important that they show an active commitment
to mental health at work and not be afraid to speak out about conditions like anxiety
or depression. They need to adopt good health and safety
management into all their decisions and reward managers for maintaining a mentally healthy
workplace. Leaders also need to promote a zero tolerance
approach to stigma and discrimination, provide flexible working conditions and support internal
champions that can lead workplace mental health initiatives.
Managers and supervisors play an equally important role in removing health and safety risks and
supporting employees with mental health conditions. For them, it's essential to have a basic understanding
of anxiety and depression and be able to talk with their employees about mental health.
They also need the skills to approach someone they supervise who they're concerned about.
This might mean making reasonable adjustments to help them continue in their role.
Employees have a part to play, too. They will benefit from a positive workplace
culture, but they also need to take reasonable care of their own mental health and the health
and safety of the people they work with. It's important for them to educate themselves
about mental health and to cooperate with workplace policies and support mental health
initiatives.
Recent TNS Social research revealed that three in four Australian workers believe organisations
that value mental health are likely to be more productive.
So, the benefits of working together to take action are clear.
