earlier in the week i told you about a pure research center poll which said
that fifty six percent of americans were in agreement with the n_s_a_
surveillance that was revealed by edward snowden ball forty one-percent of
respondents said that they were against it
there were some initial uh... shock to some people about those numbers and the
high level of support for an essay surveillance as described we now have
more polls which showed that there may have been something to questioning those
initial numbers we have a c_b_s_ poll which says that fifty eight percent of
americans disapprove of the n_s_a_ surveillance thirty eight percent
approve of it
if you say it what about in cases where the people being surveilled are
suspected of terrorist activity it reverses completely to are seventy five
percent approve
uh... one asked if the government's collection of american phone records is
necessary to find terrorists
a slight majority fifty three percent say that it is now that's interesting
because
presumably that is the point of it
but if you don't tell people that
date their they're against it
uh... another poll the gallup poll can we even really trust gallup after what
happened in the election maybe not but the same can be said of about pews so i
don't know that that tells us much
the gallup poll says fifty three percent of americans
are not they do not approve of the n_s_a_ surveillance and phone records
uh... collection suit thirty-seven percent say that they do approve and
then lastly we have a reuters it so spool which says
thirty one percent of americans would describe edward snowden as a patriot
twenty three percent of americans would describe him as a traitor and forty six
percent don't know which really tells us there's not much of a difference between
those who like or dislike what he did
mhm almost half just aren't sure about it yet
and i think
everyone still needs to
to learn more about this including us i'm sure there's a lot more complicated
if we have a problem with this being legal
right if we have a problem with the n_s_a_ surveillance of phone records
being legal
let's look at under things that are legal and just as egregious
and try to figure out why are people reacting much more strongly to this than
to other things that i think it's because
this really feels
palatable feels tangible and how it effects people on a day-to-day basis
do you realize what's in the tax code that provides in saying that benefits to
super rich people who can afford to take advantage of these things
yeah um... night kinda do but it seems far off but it's not like in my day to
day life and you know i have my job i'm not super rich i don't really know or
care doesn't affect me
wait a second after active finish making my phone calls each month the rise in
sends
a list of who i called to the government that feels very tangible
and i think that the level of
uh... of of interest in this is affected by how tangible it feels
yeah i guess anyone could
you know take a step back and say you know this could be happening to me
right uh... and there'd be nothing i could do to stop it amin
the the tax evasion thing is is a good one at the same time you have to avoid
in stocks in a way of the outlook applicant is happening in my current
animal right led to the vast majority of americans care that people were being
waterboarding bear with a note that
that's not gonna happen to them the the real question to me as if we look at any
of these polls if it's sixty forty in favor or sixty forty against
surveillance
or at those numbers even in the ballpark where if edward snowden is trying to
catalysed people to make change on this issue are sixteen oh forty numbers in
either direction and have to get people to really push for change i don't know
that they are will see in the next few weeks and months
and is doing what kind of change are we going to get my meat currently that's
another question right even if there will be
activism rounding out in a significant way
