I took a year off in between high school and college to work. I worked as a dog groomer.
I was in high school then I originally started at Trent in Oshawa and then left that really
quickly ‘cause I realized it wasn't for me and then came here in January.
It's a short commute for me and it had the program that I was looking to get into.
Marketing, I just found it was the best fit for me, so I decided to go pursue that.
None of my parents, none of my grandparents have ever done anything further than high
school, if they finished high school, so both my parents were pretty proud that both me
and my sister went to college, so it was a pretty big deal.
These students are putting together a plan for an annual marketing competition and they're
in the process of developing a recruitment strategy for participants and they're putting
together a PowerPoint pitch that they will make to a group of students in various classrooms
to try and get them to register for the competition.
DCMC is the Durham College Marketing Competition. It's held for second and third year, mostly
marketing, students. It's modeled after the Dragon's Den, so teams compete for prizes
and how they get they prizes is they pitch products or ideas to judges and the panels
of judges allot money towards them and whoever raises the most money for their idea or pitch,
it determines their placing.
Up until then it's been all classroom stuff and that was something real world that really,
kind of showed that this is what we're going to be doing and I'm glad I picked this program.
A lot of the professors are really helpful outside of class, so that's really helpful
towards success and also we have a lot of things to do outside of class, so like, our
societies and groups and participating in sports outside of class helps you kind of
get the whole college experience.
All the programs are very useful and all the professors in these programs are effective
and really, I've never felt intimidated walking up to a professor and asking a question. They're
all easy to talk to.
We get to cover a wide range of subjects and we get a lot of practical, hands-on experience.
Professors are always, kind of helping, like "oh, look at this, look at that", like they're
willing to go a little bit further to help you succeed and reach you goals.
