The tubular bind of is a way of binding of your work when you’re working in ribbing
that doesn’t leave a ridge.
It’s as if the ribbing just kind of fades out and comes to a stop.
It’s a really pretty bind off. The same way that the tubular cast on is really nice.
It’s complicated, but it ends up making a really nice invisible edge on the work.
It’s the same thing that this does.
Let’s take a look at my little sample.
When I say little sample [laughs] I used the right word.
I have one by one ribbing going here, and this is a normal cast on.
And then I did a tubular bind off.
And you can see, the stitches almost kind of curl around the top of the work.
But there is no ridge here at all.
And it makes for a really stretchy bind off, too.
It’s a little complicated, but it’s worth it, because it looks so good.
Now, I’m showing you how to do this in one by one rib. The process for doing it is different
in two by two rib, but let’s take a look at this.
You want to break your yarn and leave a really long tail.
I believe that you want to leave something at least four times as long as your work is
wide.
And, this is a little bit like the Sewn Bind-Off.
Take your tapestry needle, you go into the first stitch as if to knit, pull that through,
and take that stitch off.
Then you skip the next stitch, go into the second stitch as if to purl, and leave that
on.
Then go in – actually, you want to make sure your tension isn’t too tight there.
Then go into the first stitch as if to purl, take that stitch off.
Then the next thing you want to do is, from the back, take your tapestry needle between
the first and second stitch, pull that through, and then go in knitwise into the second stitch.
Okay, I swear, there are no more steps! [laughs] That was kind of a lot of steps!
But, let’s do it again.
So it’s into the first stitch knit, take that stitch off.
Skip that one.
Go into the second stitch as if to purl.
Don’t pull that one too tightly.
Go into the first stitch as if to purl, take that stitch off.
And then come from behind the work, between the first and second stitch.
And then go into the second stitch as if to knit.
Now I’m sure you’re going to have to watch this video a few times to get this.
I’ll do it one more time.
Knit, off.
Purl.
Purl, off.
In from the back, into that second stitch as if to knit.
And with blocking, of course, this will look a lot better when it’s all done.
The tubular bind off in one by one rib.
