Testing one, two three! Ok hey guys! This is Renai and I’m going to talk to you guys
about the kind of support Kingston gives you for when you’re doing your studies. For
me, as a Law student, we get to have special advice such as ‘Spotlight on the Law’,
where we get to meet a panel of people from different legal positions, such as barristers,
solicitors and they get to talk to us about how they got the position. Like what they
studied, the experience they got, and we also got a speed interviewing session after where
we were interviewed by three different persons and not only did we get to see kind of like
what an interview would be and the kind of questions they ask, but also like we got to
know what our strengths were and what we need to work on, so when it comes to the time of
getting interviewed then we know what to do. So we also work with the BPP Law School, which
is the school that provides the LBC that you would study if you want to become a solicitor
and then the BPTC if you want to become a Barrister and so then they run workshops here
like how to use LinkedIn, which is a social site for the professional sector and also
how to get commercial awareness. Commercial awareness is important as employers look for
that. They want to know if you’re kept up to date, like if you watch the news or what
not and you know what’s going on in the area you’re interested in. Other than that
Kingston provides a lot of volunteering opportunities for the areas you want to get into. For me
it would be, I work with the Kingston Citizen’s Advice Bureau, I’m a support worker and
so for me, what I get to do is that I get to talk to Kingston students that have certain
problems and I kind of guide them in the right direction and so it would be areas such as
debt, housing, employment, harassment and more serious issues, I refer to the main Citizen’s
Advice Bureau. Then we also have the Kingston University Community Legal Advice Centre,
where Kingston Law students get to give advice on certain areas of, in certain topics for
the Kingston community. So now we’re going to talk to my colleague, who also works with
the Career and Employment Services at Kingston.
Hi everyone! I personally work as a brand manager with the Careers and Employability
office. Basically we work at most of the events that the university has, such as Renai said,
the Spotlight on the Law event but then we also have the FMCG Fast Moving Consumer Goods
Event. There’s also a Retail Careers Uncovered Events and basically all events throughout
the faculties within the university, so be sure to look out for us, the blue team. Also
the Careers and Employability office, we help you with, well many things as the name suggests,
with your Careers and Employability, so we will help you with your interview skills,
we help you with online applications, C.V. development, your body language, any advice
you need on anything and to do with your careers, internships, you know, jobs you’re probably
looking to apply for, even for placements. Now, myself, as I’m a second year Business
School student, so I’m in the process of doing my sandwich year and part of that includes
a placement. If you go to the Careers and Employability office, they help you tremendously
with that, as I said, interviews, online application, that kind of stuff. And me personally, you
can also do it online to get lots of help.
(Renai): So yeah, other than that there’s also the Language Scheme. What Kingston offers
as well is the opportunity to learn a language as a non-credit. For me, I had signed up for
Italian, but, due to my coursework and due to my volunteering and working part time,
then I wasn’t able to, but there’s always the option there if you want to improve on
language skills, or you want to have a new language if you plan on moving to another
place, then they’re still available as well. So yeah, so thanks guys for tuning in and
please don’t hesitate if you have any questions to ask, ok, see you later
