CULTURAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAM University of Barcelona
CULTURAL PRODUCTION Production of traditional festivals
The first dates we know La Corda de Paterna was done, were about 1898.
It is not an enclosed space, is a street closed from corner to corner.
Inside, there are about 150-160 people who throw between 50 and 70 thousand fireworks.
In a globalized world, festivities bring communities together.
There are many villages whose only identifying reference is the festival.
We are trying to save the festive calendar of the city, those traditional projects held annually,
such as the Parade of the Three Wise Men, Carnival, the town's festival, etc.
In towns where the Three Wise Men exist, I think that their parades are the most important event.
In the case of Barcelona, it is an event which 4000 or 5000 people can watch in the street.
Logistics are very important, we have a lot of collaboration of public authorities, such as local police.
City services get involved and support all these events in the street, so the results are really good.
Coordination is very important for the running of the parade,
there is an artistic manager team which controls people are on time, do the acting...
There is also a technical team distributed along the way to detect and coordinate incidents,
controls sound technicians, power generators, electric vehicles, etc., and coordinates with parade direction.
So everything that happens in these events has a very important structure.
What is important is knowing when the communication team has to start working,
when has to come the artistic producer...is more of a matter of human resources,
of knowing and being able to count on the staff in the appropriate moment.
At the technical level, we are using materials which are not designed for the use we give them,
that is, a power generator is not designed to be running while moving, because liquids move,
and you might have electrical problems, so maybe one of the floats stops working.
You have to foresee the use of sound systems, obviously you cannot use a turntable because it would skip,
and the same happens with CD, so you have to use MP3 systems.
Obviously there are projects which, due to its magnitude, you have to focus in staff instead of time.
I think that, first, it is important to add value to the things you have.
Second, listen to the structure surrounding you, be it industrial or third sector.
Third, see which venues you have and make them work with the necessary materials.
Sometimes there are spare venues but not the necessary resources.
Fourth, be singular. We are following the same line, doing the same that cities around us are doing.
I do not know if not being coordinated with cities 15km around us makes sense.
