There are 5 Pillars of Islam which are the foundations of religion. These include the
Profession of Faith, Prayer, Fasting, Charity, and Pilgrimage. In Arabic these are called:
Shahadah, Salah, Saum, Zakat, and Hajj. The first Pillar of Islam is the Muslim Profession
of Faith. This called Shahadah in Arabic and translates to testimony in English. The Shahadah
in Arabic is simply Ashhadu An Laa illaha illalah AshHadu Anna Muhammadur RasoolAllah. This
translates to "I testify that there is no god except Allah (SWT), and I testify that Muhammad (SAW) is His messenger."
Shahada has two parts The first part of this testimony states that God has exclusive right to be worshipped inwardly and outwardly
by one's heart and limbs.
Second part is Acceptance of Prophethood.
Adam was the first prophet, and Muhammad (PBUH) was the final of all messengers to mankind.
This belief is central to Islam.
Shahadah is also referred to as a Declaration of faith,
first Kalimah, first Pillar of Islam, and the Muslim Profession of Faith.
Shahadah is to testify to two things. Number one:
Nothing deserves worship except God.
Number two: Muhammad (PBUH) is the messenger of God.
It must be recited by every Muslim at least once in in a lifetime
with a full understanding of its meaning and with an assent of the heart.
Muslims say this when they wake up in the morning, and before they go to sleep at night
It is repeated 5 times at the call to prayer at every mosque.
A person who utters the Shahadah as his/her last words of this life
has been promised Paradise
There are certain conditions of the Shahadah
One must have knowledge of the meaning of the Shahadah
One must believe in the Shahadah and accept it as the only truth.
Declaring the Shahadah or testimony is necessary when one accepts Islam.
