TODAY IN UNIFORM. IT MADE ONE
15-YEAR-OLD CANCER
PATIENT'S DAY, AND EVEN MAY HAVE
HELPED HIM DECIDE WHAT HE WANTS
TO
BE WHEN HE GROWS UP.
15-YEAR-OLD MICHAEL ABLES IS
LIKE EVERY OTHER TEENAGER IN
MANY WAYS.
BUT THEN IN OTHER WAYS, HES NOT.
"It started in February, it was
lymphoma.
It was going well until August
and then it just grew right back
and stopped responding to
treatment." ABLES IS FIGHTING
CANCER. TODAY HE'S HAVING TO
STAY IN ISOLATION. NOT GOOD WHEN
A RETIRED MARINE IS COMING TO
SPEAK TO THE KIDS ON HIS
FLOOR. "I've been really
thinking about the Marine's and
military and when I heard he was
coming, I had to talk to him"
SO, RONALD MIX SPOKE WITH THE
GROUP OF CHILDREN ... THEN
WALKED DOWN THE HALL TO MAKE
ABLES'S DAY. "NAT OF THEM
TALKING" MIX SAYS HE
JUST WANTED TO THE KIDS TO KNOW,
PEOPLE CARE. "If I could just go
by and talk to the kids about
adversity, explain to them some
of my challenges I
still face, and let them know
they can get through it with
God, willpower, following
doctors and family orders, they
can get through their
adversities regardless of what
they feel now.' IT
CERTAINLY MADE MICHAEL ABLES
DAY. "They're heroes." AND
ALTHOUGH TEENAGERS MAY NOT BE
THE BEST LISTENERS, THIS ONE
DID, AND I THINK HE
KNOWS WHAT HE'S GOING TO DO WHEN
HE GETS BETTER. "don't let
adversity take over." MARINE
CORP, YOU MIGHT SOON HAVE A NEW
RECRUIT.
MIX GAVE OUT POSTERS AND
STICKERS TO THE KIDS, AND
