A couple of months after
taking the leadership at TIDE
I was reflecting during a journey
with my family from Belize City
on innovative ways of increasing
conservation stewardship in Belize
and I thought of the audience
that a beauty pageant attracts.
So I thought,
why not introduce a youth
conservation competition
where youths highlight
the work of conservation groups
while at the same time
focus on a conservation issue
A pleasant goodnight
to one and all
My name is Abigaila Garcia
I am 16 years old.
I am from the beautiful
village of Big Falls
I am presently attending
Toledo Community College
Well my beautiful audience
Reporting live from
The Punta Gorda Parish Hall
With breaking news of
The Southern Environmental Association
And tonight's theme?
The value of the Belize Barrier Reef
I am your SEA-N-N host
Isabel Moreira
My name is AJ Foster
And I, as you can see,
come from only
the best school in Toledo
Julian Cho (what?)
Technical High School
A pleasant goodnight to one and all
My name is Annayelli Marin
From St. Ignatius
I am 17 years old
It's a privilege to be
a part of this spectacular event
My name is Kevin Lara
I'm representing PLENTY Belize
We work together for the people
and communities of
Toledo
Oh WOW! It's so beautiful
and colorful
and look at all the coral
I need to take a picture
It's so pretty
oh wow!
Oh, I think I'll take this sponge
This one's pretty. I'll take it home!
I'll take it to my Grandma
She loves these, you know!
I am alive! Don't you know
I am the Belize Barrier Reef
I am 180 miles long
and stretch the entire length
of Belize. I am the largest
continuous reef system in the world
I am also the largest
coral reef. I am a home to
a large diversity of plants
and animal species
OK. It's time to get in to the water.
Remember, no touching of coral
or animals.
No taking of anything you see
and no kicking of sand with your fins
You have paid for coral cleanup but remember
to reuse, reduce,
and recycle
Although the forest may seem far
from the sea...and the reef itself
we are all intertwined
and by planting a single tree
you can help reduce
run off into the sea
and help reduce the effects
of global warming
last but not least
spread the word. Tell the people
about the beauty, the value, and
the importance of the Belize Barrier Reef
Wow! I've learned alot about the reef today.
This is my reef yes, the reef of
Belize
It's like a paradise made for you
...and me
and yes we are so blessed
to have a reef for our own
take your time
to know the beauty and
tings. This is
my reef yes the reef
of Belize
It's like a paradise made for you
...and me
You've got to hear this.
This is the truth - Mi seh
we are the future
We are today-ay-ay
This is our ocean
This is the sea - Mi seh
We should be proud to
be Belizeans
Oh oh oh oh oh oh ohh
Why do we got to do
the things we shouldn't do?
Oh oh oh oh oh oh ohh
The reef was made for
Me and you! Let's show
the world that we can be
dedicated to a good
future for the barrier reef
Offshore drilling should decrease
People we ask you now please.
So let us protect our barrier reef
Please people let us do it for Belize
Yo! Offshore drilling should decrease
People we ask you now please.
So let us protect our barrier reef
Please people let us do it for Belize
YO! Listen!
Let us protect what is ours,
because we all know that we need it
Our reef is a hero but most of us don't see it
We don't want any drilling, and you know that we mean it.
So please people when it gets dirty let's clean it
Our barrier reef stands strong like the army
our barrier reef will never ever harm us
It slows down the hurricane, waves, and storm
So the offshore drilling we don't want it performed
Somebody hail me? Ah, coral sister
What happened to you?
Some inconsiderate people
They took out my corals and
threw garbage in me
They take my corals, they take my fish
They take my conchs
They take, take, take, till there's nothing left!
How do you expect me to progress?
I hear you sister, I feel your pain
All those animals out there feel the same.
You know Mr. Manatee?
He tells me they cut down all the Mangroves
Where will they have their baby grow?
And Mr. Turtle said
that they dredged the seagrass
What will they eat?
Remember my son Grindy?
he was growing up so pretty?
All of a sudden...Bam!
He ended up getting sick
And then, he died
I don't have any hope!
No future! What do I have to do?
I hear you sister
I am sorry to hear about
Your son Grindy. But, you know what?
There is hope.
I will call your friends
UNESCO, TIDE, and OCEANA
so they can some and clean you
Hmm girl, I will feel much prettier
I feel much better, more healthy
And more prettier
Thank you TIDE
Thank you OCEANA
Thank you UNESCO.
Thank you from the bottom of the sea
To all the lovely people
Thank you very much and member
Stop debris, respect the reef
Protect it. For you. For me.
For all of us. Thank you!
Besides eating seafood
In what other ways
in the rural communities benefit
from the (Belize) Barrier Reef?
The barrier reef is also a source of income
in the tourism industry
People work directly
In this particular field
to enable them to earn a living
It also helps coastal communities
in Belize from storms
Aside from the tourism industry
It also helps the farmers
because tourists purchase their
products. Thank you.
After two hours
The new Youth Conservation Competition
Champion 2012
Is no other than...
The student from
Southern Environment Association
(Loud screams and applause)
Isabel Moreira
Thank you, goodnight
