Hi and welcome to Health Education
I am Dr. Toni Pfister. You can call me Toni. I'm very happy to be your
instructor this next semester.
And I hope you find some areas of health and wellness that you're ready to
improve,
that you ready to evaluate, to find ways to improve and to increase your level of
wellness
and one of the first assignments you will be working on is a Behavior Change Project.
But, there will be more of that discussion coming up soon. I just want to let you know a
little bit about me. I've been teaching health education in community colleges
for about 15 years.
When I first started teaching this class I thought "Yes!", everybody who must walk through
that door, who clicks into our class site,
must be there because they are excited about health, maybe even excited because its an elective.
EBF
Well then I find out "No, not the case!", most people who walk through that door
are there because it's a required class. Its part of the general
education package.
And then I started teaching health education from the University where they were
teachers in my class who were
taking a health education class. And I thought "Yes!" They must be there because they want
to know more about health.
And I found out, "No!" They were there because they needed to clear their teaching
credential.
Well, what ever brought you here today - and I'm assuming for most you its because its
a required class -
I hope you find something in our class
that you are excited about, an area of your health and wellness that you want to
improve.
Maybe you are ready to improve your nutrition. Maybe you're ready to exercise a little bit
more.
Maybe you are needing to practice safe sex habits.
Maybe you need to know increase, DECREASE
the alcohol you consume. Whatever
area of health you want to improve, I hope this class can help support that and
I also want to let you know that I'm here to help.
We have a virtual office in our class and this is where you should ask your
general course questions. Questions you have about assignments, about readings
and such, please post in the Virtual Office so that other people can also
learn from your question
just as they would any face to face class. Now, if you have questions of a
private nature, I like you the message me
inside the course. I'd like you to keep all your questions, whether they be
of a general nature and public or private, I want you to keep them in the
course so that I can best help you and they don't get lost by email.
Please do not email me.
Umm, other things... I want you to get out a calendar,
get yourself set, schedule blocks of time each week
where you can do your classwork. Sometimes it can be hard when you have
an online class, you might want to postpone things, think you are going to do them later.
But if you have a set schedule, you know that every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
or every Monday Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 10 I'm going to sit in front of the
class in my pj's andf my
water, coffee, tea, whatever you like to drink in the mornings,
and sit there and work on your class projects. You ARE still expected to read the book.
I have plenty of other readings and activities in here for you to follow and
do.
So those are going to help you learn your health and wellness concepts.
We also have "Challenges". Each week you are going to have a little multiple-choice challenge
for you
to complete. Coming up soon you have your syllabus Challenge.
There's a couple of items that you need to do to stay in the class. So right away I
want you to
look around our class, to peruse it, go into our first Module, go into the Syllabus
to see what's there
and follow the directions to
your Syllabus, your Syllabus Quiz.
Module one which has planned different readings and different activities for you to do.
You also need to post your first discussion. Even if you been in Black Board
before, there's a new little discussion
feature where you will be prompted on what I want you to
write in your discussion and you won't be able to see anybody else's discussion
untill you post your own.
OK? So make sure you do that and then you post to a peer.
A peer response every week. Every week you will have at least one main discussion and one peer
discussion.
Alright, and that sounds like you can you probably get off to a really good start.
You will need your health book and it is "Your Health Today."
Okay we have a Southwestern College version and there's the regular version
out there that some of you might buy.
And it's fine to use that other than the standard version of "Your Health Today" version
version. Umm, it just doesn't have I believe the environment
chapter which is one the last chapters will go over in this class.
Alright? So I will see you soon back here
but get started right by reading your syllabus, taking the syllabus quiz,
posting your introduction discussion so
I can learn more about you. Take care!
