Hello and welcome to this video tutorial on faceted searching
at the end of this video you will be able to one
know what faceted searching is
in two how to
applied this technique
to two common article databases
Academic Search and Web of Science
what is faceted searching?
faceted searching is the use of filters to sort out
or narrow research results
you can't think of these filters as a type of sieve
they can function to strain out from too much information
or too many search results
the information or results
most applicable to you and your information needs
you have probably use
these types of filters
in places like amazon
as you can see here along the side
are various different ways a filtering out
from all the possible search results
what you might be looking for
this technique is also used for
webpages such as target
where perhaps if you're searching for something
very broad such as games
you can then narrow your search results
by category
brands
and even price
let's look at how we can apply faceted searching to help narrow search results
for a broad
search such as climate change
if we start here and Academic Search
and type in
climate change
we find that we get
over sixty three thousand results
for this search
which is clearly
to many
options
for us to find articles that would be most useful
faceted searching helps to filter out
and get to the articles
or items that are most relevant to what you might be interested in
if you look along the side here
similar to haw we saw in Amazon or at Target
we have various options
in order to help filter out
search results
the first thing that we can look at is
what type of items are we looking for
this way we can sort out
peer-reviewed articles
from academic journals
from other items such as newspaper articles or in trade publications
by doing this we have filtered out
quite a lot of options but this is still
way too many
perhaps we need to look
at possible
subject terms
academic search provides us examples of items of terms
that can help us in our search
we could also go down
and look at
various subjects that might work in conjuncture
with the term climate change
we can also go down
and search
for specific publications
perhaps you're aware of some articles
they came from a few specific journal such as Nature or Science
we can also look at the specific area of the world such as in the United States
or China
so if we decided
that we need to to find
perhaps using
the specific term of
global warming
and then
a more specific
aspect of global warming
the economic aspects
we find ourselves
with two articles
if we go to Web of Knowledge or Web of Science
we can apply a similar strategy
again if we search under climate change
we again confront
the very large number of articles
too many to go through
here we have a similar
setup
along the side
of different filters that can be applied
the also again have document types
we also have what Web of Science refers to as research areas
source titles
is referring again to the journal
that the item comes from
here we can
limit to specific publication years
languages
for this search
we're interested in
government laws that apply to climate change
as we can see here we have greatly reduce the number of
available articles
and we are only interested
in the most recent available
articles
again we have greatly reduce the number of articles
that we must go through to see if we have anything here that would be most
applicable to our search needs
I hope that you found the city to be useful
and as always if you have further questions
do not hesitate to ask librarian. Thank you.
