What does it take to be a music producer? It takes a can do attitude. There is no such
thing as not able to or I can't in this role or any role in the music business. There are
so many thousands of people waiting to be out there making music and making a living
doing it that if you can't, someone else will. So, you need to find a way to get anything
and everything done. Everything accomplished. And you have to be super talented to do it.
Success in the music business is basically making a living at it and remaining within
it. Super success is obviously the people you see on TV, you listen to when you're jogging
and listening to your iPod, listening in your car. But, it basically is a resourcefulness
of being able to achieve, despite whatever is thrown at you. It takes a certain amount
of snobbishness. I'm not sure that's the word, but you need to be a musical snob. You cannot
settle for mediocre. You can't settle with that's an okay take. Everything actually has
to be the best. You have to do things to the best of your ability. Whether it's coming
in under budget or getting the best takes or making the best record, the best album.
There is no compromise. There are no days off. There are no holidays. You don't get
double time for working on Christmas. You will work on your birthday. Yeah, you want
that job?
