Today I'm reviewing The Flying Troutmans by prize-winning author named Miriam Toews
Fans of Toews may have already read her 2004 title
A Complicated Kindness
and recall that Miriam has a unique writing style
including optional punctuation.
Her dialogue reads like the rest of the text providing an intimate in the moment feel for
her work
and that's exactly what you want in this latest adventure.
Thebes has purple hair.
Logan just got kicked out of school
Meet Hattie's niece and nephew charged to her while her sister Min
is back in the hospital.
Min has always had trouble keeping it together
in comparison Hattie's life looks void of problems, until now.
In what can be described as a road trip
full of bizarre and unsettling encounters
the Troutmans make their way across the country to track down Thebes and Logan's dad.
After all, someone has to take responsibility for these kids
and it's not going to be Hattie forever.
Sometimes sad, sometimes dark, often funny, touching and personal,
Miriam Toews really understands both the human spirit and the developing mind of
young characters
who are trying to find their place in the world that keeps moving beneath them.
Fans of The Flying Troutmans will also enjoy works from Thomas King or Kurt Vonnegut.
Off beat yet exactly on the button
The Flying Troutmans is worth the read.
