[Marching band Music] [Quintet Music]
[Jazz Vocal Band Music] >> The scholarship that we are awarding has
the goal of fostering a career in public service. Our communities and our state need public
servants who dedicate themselves to the betterment of society. So with the utmost pride, it’s
my distinct privilege to announce that Katherine Williams will the first recipient of the President
Alexander and Gloria Gonzalez Public Service and Community Leadership Scholarship.
[Applause] >> To me this scholarship means that someone
has the belief in me that I can do great things, and the financial help to me is just one aspect
of it. To me it’s the belief that I’m going to do great things and I’m going to
be a great person and I’m going to help others. And to me the fact that people have
that belief in me is a reassurance, and it’s kind of – it’s just nice to know.
>> Katherine hopes to become a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of adolescents
while advocating for the rights of the mentally ill.
>> Katie has struggled with OCD and depression in her life. And I just – I’m so proud
that she is using the pain that she’s had in her past to turn around and educate the
community and the campus, and she’s used her struggles to really help other people
and make a difference in their lives. >> Thank you so much. You two are honestly
incredibly generous. And congratulations, President Gonzalez, for all your hard work
the past ten years. It’s a wonderful accomplishment. Thank you for everything you’ve done. The
students appreciate it and me personally, I want to thank you for this wonderful opportunity.
