Time to answer some questions and comments!

Here's the latest questions and comments from email, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit,
YouTube, Google+,
and thebasicfilmmaker.com. When are you going to post something new?
Hmmm. NOW! Can you recommend a good
carrying case for video gear? Absolutely!
Hands down get a pelican case or something like that. It's waterproof, crush proof,
dust proof, goes on airplane, has an extension handle, ball bearing roller wheels,
a pressure equalization valve, padlock protectors,
padded dividers, and easy open latches. It's not cheap,
but either is your gear. "What's your cat's name?" Kitty.
The last dog I had was named "Puppy." Seriously.
Do you always use a lapel mic? Actually I don't.
There's actually a boom mic right here.
Let's make it go away. (Whoosh). OK.
As you can see, this is sitting here about
six inches from my mouth. My lapel mic is also,
when I mount it, is also about six inches from my mouth. It doesn't matter how you do it
your room is different. The only reason I'm using this,
this is a dead cat, and it cuts down noise, I found it works better
in this room. It doesn't matter whether you use a shotgun mic or a lapel mic,
or a dead cat or not, you need to test out your sound see what works best for you.
I just vary things all around because I like messing with it.
"Don't you hate it when people post "FIRST" in the comments?" No. "What's up with that
high pitched clicky noise stuff while you talk?"
He is talking about my last episode on
Lenses. I did the sound and accidentally added some effect
I didn't intend to. The speakers I was using made it sound fine.
A few days later in my normal editing studio rewatched it and said,
"Sh**!" I learned my lesson again. When you're messing around your sound make sure you listen to it
over and over through speaker, computer speakers, a good set of headphones, on your iPad,
through a crappy set of earbuds, and maybe even your TV.
Otherwise you miss things. The same goes for video - watch it on your computer,
iPad, TV and laptop. "Fo Shizzle Dizzle My Nizzle!!"
"I hope you Americans one day see the light
and come to the metric system. Really, it's surreal to me having to deal with
fractions the body parts."
Get it? "Body parts". He's talking about feet.
It's a good point here - if you make videos or DIY builds or anything like that
make sure to take into account the other sixty-seven percent of the world that uses
the metric system. "Usually while the show is great, I find your jokes a little goofy and
probably don't share the same sense of humor."
See that makes me laugh because this guy is a physicist. So here's one...
A neutron walks into a bar and asks the bartender, "How much for a drink? The bartender replies,
"For you, no charge!" "I would love it if at the end of this video
there's footage showing a result of this "Steadicam" shot.
Thanks!" He is talking about my zero
dollar stabilizer where I show how to use a tripod as a shoulder rig.
Okay. Here's the footage before and after.
I had a ton of questions and comments on my last episode about lenses.
Lenses are like camera, beer, wine and coffee.
Everyone has their opinion and a preference and their best. So here's
one website you can look at
with all sorts of cameras and lenses. KenRockwell dot com.
He's got a review and recommendation on just about every
camera and lenses you can think of.
So go there, check it out, decide what's best for you,
in your situation. "You're making air quotes in the wrong places
all the time. It's kinda cringey. Please stop."
OK. I will. "I'm just not jazzed any more about making films and can't get others to help me. Please help!!
You create your own feelings no matter what others like you to believe.
So yank yourself up out of the "I am NOT the cause of my own feelings
crowd", put together something you really want to do go make it happen.
You can walk around the block and look at how everything
sucks, or you can walk around the block and look at how
amazing things are around you. The only difference is your attitude. So go make something!
I hope that helps,
and thanks for watching!
It's a dead cat. It's not really a dead cat.
It's not even even a cat. It's a furry thing.
So while you're shooting your video you can go like this if you're feeling lonely...
Now that's pretty creepy
