Welcome to this new column dedicated to the board-game or for our own the board game today our first episode to be dedicated C.O.A.L.
a really interesting game I am Alberto and: SIGLA
before starting the presentation of C.O.A.L.
I would like to dedicate a few words to the manufacturer the Dast@work an Italian company
that has produced three games the Lord of Dragons, Drako, and C.O.A.L. last arrived presented in Modena 2013
the game takes place in the steampunk universe and is big robot battles
ehm not those robots something more steam!?
a middle way!? we succeed!?
oooh we understood each other!
arrived finally time to open the box and see what it contains inside the lid we can set it aside so we do not need more
and now look at the inside of the box inside we can notice that there are two manuals one in Italian one in English
the manual is in color and is composed of 16 pages well illustrated let's take a quick look just to see what's inside then move on to the next piece
we arrived at the most important moment and what we all expected: the big robots our robots steam are four now we will see them one by one a little quickly
each robot has a card of introduction
where it's put a pilot
between the two available
and a series of moves
these moves are twenty cards that will make all the movements
of the robot that will be used to fight
let's look also to the second model
same system always two pilots and a deck of skills
here it is in front of your eyes
a second for watching
then move on to the next
and here is the third model
while explaining this thing
see them all his moves its pilots
and above all each robot is different
has the characteristics and qualities proper
and finally the fourth model
let's take a quick look to its pilots and its cards
and move on to the next element
a thing very nice present in the box
are the two pilots training
serving to all those who have never played a board game
and greatly simplify the rules of the game.
the last item in the box are the counters
including various types of them
between counters of energy dualface
on the one hand we have the electric and on the other one the coal
counters life points
that is are the ones that you will need to mark the life points of the robot
and the counters tag team
that will be used in tag team mode
after seeing what we have inside the box
we begin to explain what the rules are
and how many players can play this game
basic the game is created from two to four players
for explanations that I will do in this video
I will use the two-player game
first thing we have to choose the robot that will challenge
remove two robots from the table here they are
and keep these two models
facing each other
and begin our game explaining the deck of cards
first of all we place counters on the zero of the robot
that is the robot is intact has suffered no damage
ok, let's start with the cards
in this game there are three different types of card
that is attacks that are marked with an arrow here it is
and usually inflict a total amount of damage
exist two types of attacks
both those coal and electric ones
after the attack of course we have the reaction
the symbol of the reaction is two opposing arrows
and usually nullify damage of the right color
the last card very important are the accumulators
this card will always played up
then later I will explain the why
is a very expensive card but
has very strong effects
will load on its own and will take effect after a certain number of turns
pilots
each robot has two pilots who can use
but in those matches you can use
any pilot for any robot
the most important thing of a pilot are the actions
every pilot does a number of actions
usually are two more a special action
in its turn is constrained however must
obligatorily use one of his two actions to load energy
let's see this pilot Von Nemo
running with the first action can charge two red energy
with the second one charges two electric
these energies will serve to pay the costs of the cards
above have the cost of the cards
for example this card to be played
needs three coal energy
how to play a card!?
a card can be played in two ways
or face up to own robot
in that this case the opponent can see the card
and by positioning above the energies
when the card will be charged
it can be used against the opponent's robot
or covered
and here begins the hard part
once you put the card face down
you'll never look at that card is
and then you have to load the energies in memory
if by chance you're wrong energy charge
that is charge it too much
in addition to doing damage to the opponent robot
you will take one damage
if yuo are wrong the type of charge of the card
when you will discover the card
you will discard your card and you only will suffer one damage
Each player starts the game with five cards
and may place in front of his robot
a maximum of five cards
charged in order to be used against the robot opponent
the draw in this game is not as in all games
at the beginning of the turn but at the end of your turn
when you decide to pass the turn to your opponent
In that case we will add a card to our hand
a player may decide not to place energies on their cards
to draw two cards
that turn is a turn of recovery
in which the pilot will draw two command cards
and must then pass the turn to your opponent
now we will perform two / three rounds of play
to see a little the dynamics of the game
remember that in the first turn
the robots can't attack
the first thing players have to do
is to draw five cards
then you choose who goes first
I kindness this round I will start my colleague
so that he can place their cards
I remind you that the cards can be placed
or faced up in front of their robot
or covered and not more than five
ok places an attack card covered
then uses one of the actions of his robot
the number one two power points for charging
of course the robot can not attack because this is the first round
in response
playing a second card here covered
I do not know what is down there
but he may have another defense or attack
when passing the turn the player draws card
"I pass"
exactly
it's up to me
I put a card face down i active the action number one
that is recovering two red energy that's coal
and put them on the card face down
then play a second card covered
I pass my turn and draw a card
"very well in my turn I decide to attack you"
therefore, it consumes two red energies on card
and executes the attack that would deal me one damage
shows the card here
and in response
i use the energy on my card
and cancel one damage here it is
so that my robot does not suffer even damage
the cards end up in the graveyard
from where they cannot be recovered
In this game you win in two ways
the first when the robot ends at zero life points
the second at the end of the deck every robots will suffer two damages for each card that cannot draw
What do I think of the game? it is very interesting
both for the dynamics of play and for ease of learning
In fact, in all the matches I've played
with people who were the first time playing with this board game
quickly learned all the rules
and have been able to recreate them with other people
another thing that interested me about this game is the quality of the materials
I must say that it is very well cared for and
as well as designs and graphics I have nothing to complain about
the thing that I really like is the ability to be able to get a deck built
that is the player can create their own robot
therefore it is not tied to the four robots that are present in the box
but everyone can create a new model all for himself
what I think in the end? I'd say it's a great game
to keep in your collection.
