The Drawing Factory is a Cultural Engagement initiative at the University of Birmingham
to get everybody involved, to get drawing and get talking about what art means to them.
Right then, ladies and gentlemen, good morning. Welcome to The Drawing Factory we’re about
to open. All right, well my name’s Ben Goodwin and my role here in The Drawing Factory is
that I am the foreman. I do run quite a hard line but we do have a laugh. We’ve had a
laugh, haven’t we guys? We have had a laugh, you know.
We’ve got a hard-working team of artists in the Factory, churning out artwork for charity,
so you can buy a piece for £1 or you can commission a piece for £2.
Hi, I’m Sarah Taylor Silverwood.
I’m Bobby Nixon.
And we’re artists in resident at the University of Birmingham. Today we’ve been running
The Drawing Factory in the Library, in the iLounge here at the University and it’s
been really great to take drawing out of our studios and into the public and to get everybody
drawing.
When I saw The Drawing Factory being advertised I thought it was a really good idea. I got
my profile done and I’m really happy with it. I think it’s really good and yeah, a
really fun way to make some money for charity.
It’s been amazing coming to The Drawing Factory today. It’s just really unusual
and really creative and it’s just such a break from your normal office work and sitting
at your desk.
I saw this event advertised on Twitter this morning and it said you could commission a
piece of art, so I popped in because it’s my daughter’s 18th birthday. I gave one
of the artists a few ideas about what she is and I got a piece of art for £2, which
is great. So that’s it.
I’ve really enjoyed coming over to The Drawing Factory this morning and I’ve seen a lot
of great drawings, a lot of people enjoying themselves with smiles and I think there should
be a lot more of this going around the campus and I think it would be a really good thing
for the University.
I’ve really enjoyed coming into the Drawing Factory today.
It’s such a rare opportunity to get artwork commissioned and watch them do it and it’s
been fantastic.
Really good fun,.
Yep.
A lot of effort’s been put in and all the artists are really, really talented.
Yeah.
It’s been down to the artists really. They are the life, the blood, the heartbeat of
this event really.
The factory foreman has worked us to within an inch of our lives but it’s been really
good and it’s all been for charity so it was worth it.
Really good to get people who wouldn’t normally be drawing, to come in and draw with us.
The Drawing Factory has brought together staff, students and the community in a really fun
and creative way. We’ve got everybody talking about what drawing means to them.
