Welcome to the Kid's Library Catalog Tour from the Allegany County Library System
Go to the library's website at http://www.alleganycountylibrary.info
Ask a grown-up for help if you aren't sure how.
Do you see the puppy on the screen at the top? His name is Scout. Click Scout the Puppy to search the library.
Heeeere’s Scout! He’s hanging out in his backyard by his house reading a book.
Scout is thinking about all of the things he likes: football, monsters, skateboarding, and dinosaurs to name a few.
When you see Scout favorite things, if you see something on the screen that you like too, you can click on it to see what the library has for you to check out!
This first time, Scout will show you how it’s done. Scout is going to click on the picture of the dinosaur.
Wow! Look at all of the dinosaur books! The first one is called Dinosaur Parents, Dinosaur Young by Kathleen Zoehfeld. The dinosaur babies are so much smaller than their parents, aren’t they? I wonder where this book can be found in the library?
Maybe Scout can help? Yes, he can! Scout is going to click on the book cover. I wonder what will happen?
The book cover flipped over. We can read a little bit of what the book is about. Scout says there’s more…
Scout is now showing us where the book can be found in the library. Look, it’s at the Washington Street Library. And it is in the children’s book section at J567.9 Z.
Scout says we’re lucky, since the book is checked in. That means that you can come to the library to check it out! Are there more dinosaur books to see at the library? Let’s take a look!
There are lots of books on dinosaurs to check out at the library. Scout says that you can either click on each book cover to see each one, or you can use your right and left arrow keys on the computer’s keyboard to view them.
Plus, if you have one of those snazzy touch screen monitors, you can actually use your fingers to move from one to the next. There’s more to see. OK, take us there! Scout says to click on his picture at the bottom of the screen.
Do you see on the left of the screen there are some books? These are books that feature the same characters or are related to one another.
When books are connected in some way, they are called a series. Scout really likes Curious George, so he’s going to show us books in that series by clicking on Curious George.
And, here are all of the Curious George items in the libraries. There are even some movies! Scout has one more thing to show us. Do you remember how to get back to Scout’s main screen? That’s right! Click on Scouts picture at the bottom of the screen.
By typing words in the search at the top of the screen, Scout will take you to what the library has in the collection that you might enjoy. I’m interested in books about the sircus.
Yikes! Scout has a message for me. He says, I couldn’t find SIRCUS, but I found circus. Of course! I didn’t spell it correctly. Thank you Scout. Yes, can you please take me to books about the Circus, c-i-r-c-u-s?
And here they are, thank you Scout.
Thank you for all of your help today, Scout. We enjoyed the tour of the library’s kids catalog, and think we’re ready to try it ourselves now. See you later!
