>>Ken: 50 Kent has been the headquarters of Mennonite Central Committee Ontario for the
past… I don’t know how many years! But there are big plans in the works for a new
building… … one that is more accessible, more creation
friendly, and with a lot more action.
Sounds like the quiet in the land is looking to make some noise!
And here is our noise-maker-in-chief, Rick Cober Bauman, how’re you doing, Rick?.
>>Rick: Ken!
>>Ken: What can you tell us about the new building, and why does MCC need it?
>>Rick: Well, I love the building we’re in now, we’ll soon have been at 50 Kent
for almost 50 years…. And we’ve done some growing.
Just in the last ten years, we’ve grown by over 90 percent! So, we do need some more
space.
But probably more importantly is, we want this space to be more active with lots of
activity. Probably the best way to do that is to bring our two Thrift Shops – Kitchener
and Waterloo – together, under one roof with MCC here.

Ohh, I’m sorry I better take that –
>>Ken : Sure, no problem >>Rick: [background] Hello?
>>Ken: MCC Thrift Shops are a huge part of MCC’s work…
not only through their community outreach, but also with their yearly financial contributions.
Last year, they gave over 2 million dollars!
And here to tell us more about Thrift, Heather Gallion.
>>Heather: Hey Ken! >>Ken: How’s it going?
>> Heather: Not bad, and yourself? >>Ken: I’m all right. What can you tell
us about Thrift, and the new building here? >>Heather: Well, currently there are two MCC
Thrift Shops in KW… and we are packed. We’re looking to increase our capacity by
at least forty to fifty percent, which means more funds for MCC! We’ll have shared warehouse
space with MCC Material Resources, not to mention the other shared facilities with the
other partners in the building. Do you know how many existing organizations
are currently crammed in this building?
>>Ken: That’s true. >>Heather: Nice shirt by the way – where’d
you get that? >>Ken: You sold it to me.
>> Heather: Oh yeahhh…
>>Ken: There are a lot of organizations here at 50 Kent. But if you’ve ever come down
here at lunchtime and sat around the big table, you will know what a blessing it is to have
so many people working under the same roof, working with a common vision, a common purpose,
and with a common spirit. It’s a wonderful thing.
>>Rick: Ken, I know you really want to see these plans, to see what 50,000 square feet
looks like, but – it’s really about a lot more than a building.
There’s a lot of people that are looking to MCC to respond to the needs of the world,
to be faith in action. I think that’s a call to us to grow our capacity, to share
God’s love and God’s compassion in the name of Christ. But that’s gotta be a community
effort. Will you join us?
