[Acoustic Folk Music with Percussion] Emma: I’m
Emma Hutchens. I’m an Interdisciplinary Studies major, I designed my own degree
in community health and environmental policy.
Sonia: My name is Sonia Marcus and I and the new director sustainability here UNC
Asheville.
I’ve been actually really excited to see the direction that UNC Asheville
students are going in,
which is that students without being solicited are interested in local food,
they are interested in learning how to do things themselves. Sonia: Sustainability
isn't science problem and it's not a philosophy problem
its about thinking holistically
about life and society and the planet, bringing all those things together and
then finding the best ways forward.
Emma: So Rhoades Garden is this funny project because it is the largest garden here
at UNC Asheville
and no one knows about it really. Sonia: Rhoades Garden is one of the
showcase projects that we have here on campus for sustainability
and I'm excited to be a bigger part it going forward. Emma: It’s this beautiful fully
functioning
garden with a nice fence and a greenhouse. We produce a good amount of food,
a lot of that food goes to the teaching kitchen so
it gets used for education and then we also have classes that meet there.
I came to UNC Asheville because I wanted to study everything
the fact that I can study environmental studies and sociology at the same time
and understand how intricately
linked they are is not something that is encouraged at
other universities.
Sonia: The students here are unique—they’ve
achieved level of sophistication in their understanding of environmental
sustainability
and a level of passion and commitment which
I have not seen at other schools and it's just an amazing privilege to be
able to work with them.
