CELIMAR ADAMES: On other issues, as a great victory,
it was by cataloged the management of the Church Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses
Supreme Court determination on the right to refuse,
for religious reasons, blood transfusions.

NORMANDO VALENTIN: With a split vote of 4-3,
the Puerto Rico Supreme Court resolved a conflict of at least six years,
in which recognizes the right of a person to reject blood transfusion
as a medical treatment on base of religious conviction, even if it may cause his death.
This was welcomed by members of the Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
REINALDO CANDELARIA: "It means a great victory for the Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses,
which as you know very well for years have been trying to validate the right of every patient,
not just Jehovah's Witnesses, to decide ... "
NORMANDO VALENTIN: The particular case began in court in 2005,
after a parishioner received over his will a blood transfusion.
LIC. ALVARO R. CALDERON: "The decision is not giving the green light to suicide.
But it recognizes the right of every person to refuse
any treatment that person does not want."
NORMANDO VALENTIN: The determination of the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional
article 6 of Law Number 160 of 2001, known as Statement will
on medical treatment in case of terminal health condition
or persistent vegetative state.
REINALDO CANDELARIA: "The United States is recognizing the rights of minors,
with some emotional maturity, to also decide on their medical treatment."
NORMANDO VALENTIN: The court stated in its opinion, developed the chairman, Hon. Federico Hernandez Denton,
that the refusal of a person to receive a transfusion does not respond to a disregard for life,
but to his religious faith - a reason why a person may invoke this right.
