As you can see I have opened up my copy of Camtasia studio this happens to the version 8.1 I believe
and it'll always open to this little introductory screen
in case you want to pick up a project you are currently working on it you'll probably see over here under the recent projects
and or fewer record the screen you can click on the record screen button here and actually
start recording directly into Camtasia or you can import your media
So what I normally do, I am going to start a brand new
Camtasia video now. I'm just going to close this little helpful introduction so that we can see the screen.
The screen is divided into three parts.
You have this part here which is considered to be the Clip Bin.
And you can see there's other
options going across the bottom here. This is the library which contains all kinds of
automatic things that you can do with
your video. Call outs which are arrows and
highlights and text, and all kinds of things you can add into it.
Zoom and pan which allows you to zoom in onto a screen
so it is easier for the students to see what are
talking about or filling in.
The audio which allows you to control the volume
of your presentations.
Transitions if you do have a series of
still shots that you want to transition from, like you can do in PowerPoint then you could use this to transition I usually don't do much of
that except maybe at the very beginning to transition and variant of transition you'll fade to black type of thing.
Then you have a "more" area
which allows you to have cursor effects and other various things and record the camera if
you want to have a picture of you from the web cam that type of thing or adding captions
or doing quizzes. So this
is the kind of the heart of all of the
assets that you have to put into your video
this section is the canvas that allows you to see what it is you're working on and you have play buttons and that sort of thing here
so that you can work your way back through or just relisten to something or re-watch it to make sure that it's
highlighting and zooming the way that you want it to.
and this bottom section down here is the timeline and this will show you what
video and pictures and images you have, which audio you have
where it is located and this is the timeline showing you how how many seconds are part
of a second something will show or come up so
this is where you actually put it all together. So you have the clip bin up here for assets,
the actual preview screen here to show you what it's looking like, and then the
whole work area down here for you to put things in the right order.
OK so now if we're going to start something what we want to do is start out by importing
the media.
Think of where your project file or your project folder is located
and pull in from it everything that you want to go into this video.
So I choose to import media
I'm going over to my removable disk my USB drive
down to the project folder.
and I'll choose some things here that I want to have come in
I did a little video clip here, so I want to use that
and I think there was another one - here's another one so I can do
control and click on that
and I think
all the rest of these are screenshots that I use that I don't need at this point, so let's start with those.
and I'm going to open
and it shows you here your video clips
that you have recorded and you've brought in
to create this new video from.
Let's go back into the import media
and here is that folder that I created with all my PowerPoint slides. So I'm going to open that up
and here's all the slides from that PowerPoint that I had said "gee I'd like to use some of these."
So I'm just going to
select a few of these to bring in just to show you
what they would look like. You can do the
shift click to highlight several,
and then Open
and you'll see that it brings all your image files
down here all together where they are. And first you have all the recording files and then if I had a separate audio file,
you could import that and they would come in down below as well.
OK so now here we are
we're ready to get started and maybe one thing I would like to do is start with a
slide just so I could record an introduction
So I'm going to grab this - It is drag and drop you grab it and you drag it down
to 1 of the tracks and I only have one track so far
so I'm going to click on there.
and comes up with this important screen here
what size do you want your video to be? - the dimensions in other words and this is in pixels. So you want to keep
the aspect ratio make sure you keep its own isn't like a long and skinny or something like that
so click on the down arrow here and I try to make them
as large as I as I can so that
they'll get as good a clarity
as the graphic was when I grabbed it or when I took it off of a another monitor.
so I'm going to come down also to here where it says YouTube or screencast - that's kind of an optimal size
for Youtube so that's what you're thinking of doing or saving it in something likeYouTube
you can click on it here
it will give you the dimensions you'll see the dimensions in the background here
of what size your video will show up once it's completed.
and then I'd just say OK
and a part of it is done
so now what do we do next. Well I'd probably want to say, "What do I want to do with this
picture that I started out with." I can always come up here into the canvus area, click play
and it shows you what it looks like and you can see
the little
play bar here is moving along as it does that
so if I wanted
to actually record something here on this
first slide I could do that
I could go up and record something
along with this or perhaps I have recorded outside of here and I could just bring that audio clip in
and attach it
But for right now I think OK. it's fine
Maybe you think it should be showing on the screen more than 5 seconds, so all right once they want to show for 10 seconds
you see the timeline here
and has 10 seconds right here so if I grab the edge
of my picture
and pull it over you can see the duration building up
say I want to show it for 10 seconds
I can just bring it over here to 10 and let go
and now this picture will show for 10 seconds
This is a nice to know that you can do this too, so if you want to put up some pictures of
- flowers or whatever it is then you can stretch them to be whatever length you want them to be.
and then you can lay your music in the background in behind this.
But now let's say I want to bring in my main
video that I recorded showing students how to get into Adobe connect so I'll come up into my recording area
I know that this is it. I grab it, drag
drop down here
right next to where my picture is
you see a little area there between them, you want to slide it. Just click and drag and slide it over
See the little yellow line you get to know things are in alignment.
and now in this one you can tell that it's a video because it also has
the audio running along here underneath of it.
now you might want start out by saying
"OK lets see if what I started out with is OK or do I have to go back to this first slide and
record a different introduction here. So let's start here where we are
I'll go up into the Canvas area and click to play
(audio from clip)This is a brief video to show you as a participant how you can access the Adobe connect. (end audio)
Alright so that's not too bad. I probably eventually would want to go back and put some kind of an introduction to tell them who
I am and this is Eastern University and all of that good stuff
but for now this will work fine. So I would actually start listening
through to all of what I have recorded to make sure that it's just the way that I want it to be.
So I would
listen on but I'm just going to pull it across here for now
and you can see that I've basically I talked through a PowerPoint showing students how to do this
showing them how to signin,
using their username and password
and here I have a little problem because my computer clicked in here. So probably want to just get rid of that area
I don't think I was saying anything right in there. Look here. It's flat, that means it was silent
so that's a good thing for me I can back up here
to about in here where it is also still silent
and I want to cut out that part that had that little screen that popped open
OK so right here is where you are in the video. This is
like your your play bar right here. So you would come over here - look at your tools - zoom into see it closer
If you wanted to make your audio file bigger you could zoom in
there's an undo or redo, the scissors - no we don't cut yet because we haven't told it what we want to cut
Right now if I click cut, it's going to cut the entire video out of it.
that's not it; so
let's go over here where it says 'split'
yes I want to split the video right here. cut out a section - so I want to split it at the beginning and at the end
So I'm going to click here
and you can see what it did
it actually has split the video.
you will not notice anything as you're playing through here. It'll just smoothly go to the next one - let me show you
(audio on) "and there's a mess right..." (audio off)
So I want to get rid of that. So let's go on up to where that finally went off of my screen...
and here I can come up and split it again, because this little section is what I want to get rid of.
so I'm working in this piece of the video now
I'll split it right here.
and now come down, grab ahold of this section and see it lets me pull it out
I can put it somewhere else if I wanted to, but really don't want it at all;
so I'm just going to and click on it right here
and now I can cut or you can delete
and it cuts whatever is highlighted
So now that piece is gone. I'll come down here, click this ending area
slide it over.
and now this silent area here should not have that little popup...
(audio on) "connect as three levels" (audio off) There we go
got rid of that little snafu right away
OK? and you continue through, I like to work from
the beginning to the end
just to make sure that the video is what I want it to be. That I don't have to add anything
or like I did there just a little bit ago - I deleted something. So I want to just continue on working through my video.
I'm going to go on ahead here - in the interest of your time.
let's pretend like all the rest of this is pretty good...
and then I come to this section here where it says you want to run the audio setup wizard and
in my Powerpoint - now there's another of those silly things!
I'll just leave that one for now but again
providing that I wasn't saying anything important right then you could cut that out but
since you can look down here and see that I had some audio going on,
I may just choose to leave that.
I want to come over here because after
I chose to do this to show them how to do an audio setup wizard,
you can see the next thing I showed them was all of these steps
and that's just not good; especially when I can go in
and actually capture
going through the audio setup wizard. So that's what I really want to do. So let me
listen to a section here leading up to it and see where I want to put it in.
(audio on) "enter to be sure that your headphones and mic are working properly" (audio off)
So, probably right here I want to be able to go in, and then I'd given an introduction
to it, so right here's where I'd really like to put in
that other piece of audio or video that I created.
so again I'll 'split,'
I'll slide this down
kind of out of the way. You'll see that later we want put to push it down even further.
But for now, that'll work.
and I'm going to come up. Here's my audio setup wizard video
grab it...
drag it down here
and it puts it up above. It creates new tracks for it, and that's fine.
and notice it creates two tracks
because it not only
grabs my own
a voice, which it is doing it up here; and also grabs any system noise that you have
going on with the audio that you created.
so - and we know when we run audio setup wizard there is a certain area - you can see it
right here where it makes a sound so people can test their
home
headphones.
Scroll on over
what I'm going to do is grab this last section of my original video
and keep pulling it to the right
until I get it to the end
There's the end of my audio setup wizard video
Get to the end here. oops oops. And stop right there.
You can see that it is lined up. I've got my yellow line here
so as I'm going back through this
what I'll see and I would play through this again make sure that everything is OK.
and let me take us down to the end so when I get to the end it
should go back smoothly to the other video that I originally had. (audio on)" setup to work properly inside of Adobe connect" (audio off)
OK so this is the end of this part and I could actually cut off some of that trailer. (audio on) "These are
the six steps that it takes add something here" (audio off)
OK It is a good thing that I listened to this because now I realize
I did add something here I don't want to leave this section in my video. So I'm going to go
one more time and
split it...
grab the section that I really don't want.
Make sure you highlight the one you want to get rid of and then click on cut.
and now I can slide this back over.
I'll pull the playback back over a little bit
and see if this sounds better to me.
(audio on) "connect......" (audio off)
I think it want to get rid of some of that dead air. (audio on) "You should now have access to your Adobe Connect site and you're ready
for your live session." (audio off) OK so that's a smooth transition from
doing this other sequence, into the ending.
Now there's another thing you may think, and and it could be so, that
-let me go down here a little bit so you can see this better-
(you may think) that maybe my voice wasn't quite loud enough on this particular section, so
what I'd want to do is increase my audio.
So once I have pretty much all my audio laid in here
I would come up here
click on a section, go to audio
and here's what I suggest you do
I suggest that you go ahead and 'Enable Volume Leveling.'
that'll keep it level from one segment to the next.
and I also choose to 'Enable Noise Removal' so if there's any background noise-
a little hum or something from your computer, whatever
it'll minimize that... so...
now I want to look at my other sections.
I want to make sure that they are also the same that they have been enabled
for volume leveling and noise removal.
I'll come over to my next section
which is here.
I want to do the same thing here - volume leveling, noise removal
click on this one down here which was the system sound
do the same....
And then I'm going to slide back over
to my last little piece here. Click on it
Enable...and noise removal.
Now is a good point to Save it before you start doing anything else to it.
Right here I'm going to go back to File menu and save the project.
It allows me to give it a name. It's going to save it
inside of your Camtasia folder.
Or you could force it to save it into your project folder. I think that's what I'm going to do in case I want to work on this at home or
someplace else. Let me go here to find where I want to save it
There it is - my hard disk or removable disk.
Camtasia. I'm going to give this a name and going to call it
'Camtasia ...
part 1'...
And I don't want to be an .mp4; but I'd save it as a camrec or camproject file right now that's what it is. So hit Save.
And it saved it.
What I'm going to do is stop working on it right here,
so that you can think about this next part that we did. Let me give you a quick review...
We came in and to start a new project
we went to our clip bin. We imported media.
I imported both of my videos. Then I went back
and I imported some still shots that I wanted to use.
Then I grabbed them - whichever ones I wanted first and dragged them down into the track.
In this case I did drag just a still shot as my first slide and then I grabbed
my video, brought it down...
went across, listened to it.
I found a place where I wanted to cut something out.
Then I said here's where I want to insert another video. So remember we
got our Playback arrow right where we wanted it to be, and then we split the video.
I went up
grabbed my new video segment that I wanted, pulled it down in here,
and then I had to move over - move my little audio segment that was all by itself
moved it over here so
it would play this and then drop back down to playing this. Piece of cake, right?
The last part that I did, which you could have done
as you brought the videos in, was I clicked on each segment and made sure that under 'Audio'
that I had Volume Leveling and Noise Removal checked. So it keeps my voice as level as it can and
gets rid of any background noise that it can as we go throughout. So, I'm going to stop here will come back shortly
and start the next segment where we actually do some editing of our video
