hi guys thor here winner of the loop video challenge 2012
where i wone the loop cross s1
the new system from loop
they were allso kind enough to send me the loop evotech five seven reel
i went to the shops today it got some backing put on... i think it's
time for me to share with you the
knotless knot
joining the backing to your
fly line or running line
so her we go
here is a list of tools that you are going to need for this task...
it's the
the glue
that uh...
comes with any waders you buy these days, its typical wader repair glue.
there's the
bobbin threader.
not to forget the ...
which is called a dubbing needle
and of course the key ingredient is
a little bit of braid.
the first thing you going to want to do is take your braid
make your loop
like so
giving you a loop that you can use to put
your fly line through.
take about half a metre
give or take.
tighten up your braided loop
tighten up pretty well
hold on tight
and then strip down
to the core
as you see that just comes off
take your needle
and put it through
where the core
meets the line/ coating
like so
you'll see that that's just in there
and then psh the core a little bit onto the needle
until the needle pops out.
and then take the bobbin threader.
and you can begin threading
this through the core
you do this
buy putting the threader
into
the whole that you've made with the needle
then you're able to thread about ten to fifteen cm
up, onto the threader .
that will look something
like that and then you take it out
over here
once you take that out it's time to introduce the
underline or backing
it's quite a simple process you just put it
through the bobbin threader
you then pull it through the inner core.
very simple
just pull it all the way through.
dont be shy its only underline and does not cost much.
so just take as much as you need
and then
it will look like this
i have underline
running through the core of my fly line.
i have a tag end out here,
which is very long but that's not a problem
because we're going to cut that off anyway
then it's time for the next step
whereby you take your
dubbing needle
and you do the same thing to do the core
only you do it to the underline this time.
now bare in
mind that we are threading in
the direction
of the fly line
here is the tag end of the running line
and that is going to go through the the centre of the backing.
once you have managed to thread the bobbin threader
through the center of your backing
then you
shuld have something looks a little bit like this
basically
its the needle going through the backing
i am then going to put
the end of my fly line
through the
bobbin threader
and pull this whole line
all the way through
ut before i can do that
i need
too
first
prepared the
end of the running line
and that is where it once again
the needle comes into play
and uh... what you want to do
is basically just divided it in half
you'll want to start
quite far out
this can get a little bit tricky but basically put to needle through
and just
split up
the core of the fly line
you want to get about a good cm
maybe two
so once you
have sorted out
the
separation of the
two threads like that
should look something like so then remove the bigger of the two
this will give you a nice
thin little
half with of the core
then you can take your threader and thread
the court though there
and thread it right up to where
that meeting is of uh... where you made that cuts
earlier
and then
you can simply take
your backing and run your
core through it.
this will then look something like so
next it's very simple
just take your core
put it like so
take the other side and put it like so
essentially
what you get
once you pulled into one another
and pull them all the way
is something
like this
as you see there is no knot there
all i need to do now is
pull this in
one direction
pull this in the other
and now i have a knotless backing to
to fly line connection
it's really is a simple as that
you'll remember that i had the glue
we are going to take the glue
which looks like that
once again thread that down
exposing the core that has gone through the core $%/&$&
if you want to call it that.
then dab some glue on that
and uh... quite simply
just run it up
once up and down and up again
and that's is
once i've done
you could pull it tight like so
and then go to the other side
and do the same
pull the core down
closing it off like that
take your glue
put a dab there
once again just pull
it is now glued
once it's glued
you can uh...
pull on both ends
being the
fly line and the backing and you can
tighten the knot/ join up
once thats done
we will then put
two nail knots
ether side using
the braid
that i mentioned earlier
so we're going to put a nail knot
where these two lines meet
that being
over here where the tag end comes out
just a little nail knot
then do the same
on the other side
where these two lines meet
once again just a little nail knot
and uh... then we'll cut the tag ends off
i will then pull it tight and
that will close
the core
that i've gone through onto the other core/ backing that is underneath
that looks a little like this
six to seven is all that is necessary
that will give you what is commonly known as a nail knot
NICE HEY????
you can then take
your tag end
pull the core in the opposite direction
cuts off said
tag end
pull tight
then take your nail knot
once again
pull that tight
i am going to clamp
onto that the core that is inside
and uh... that is going to hold
nicely
in place
then do the same on the other side
this is what the finished knot looks like. its from here to here its that long
inside here
i've got underline running through core
and this side
core running through underline / backing
glued here and here
i have 2 nail knotsone on
each side.. just where i have cut
the tag end off
and uh...
that's my solution to those
terrible days
when you're on the river or
on the lake
you catch a fish
or you hook a fish rather
uh... with your five lbs tippet
he runns you to your backing and the knot gets cought in th guids
and breaks the line
this will never happen to me again. i am looking
forward to trying this
every knot needs a name... allbright... nail knot...
and so on. i think we shall call this one
the THORPEDO SPLICE
tight lines
keep fishing
