A STORY ABOUT THE FIRST ECO-CERTIFIED
COMPREHENSIVE COMMUNITY URBAN GARDENIN MARIBOR
Looking at it now, it all seems very well organised.
Neatly arranged garden sheds, everything fits together.
There is a problem though:
it bothers me to see some of them already fencing in their own plots.
GREEN UTOPIA A DOCUMENTARY
ABOUT COMMUNITY URBAN GARDENING
A little lower.
26, 20.
I should be around to supervise, they are, after all, measuring my land.
How much is it now?
Let’s have a look. Inspection!
I am a sociologist, and I’d like to remind you of something.
Every community even the most emancipated,
autonomous, educated, involved community
always finds itself in conflict.
In the end, this garden might turn into a typical Slovenian garden,
with every neighbour fencing in their plot, and covering it with a pile of dirt.
But it just might, on other hand, become a positive example of good practices.
One that drew its inspiration from abroad
and showed that it could be done in Slovenia;
setting up an alternative approach
that could be implemented in similar contexts.
Yes, I think it was around 80 euros.
It’s not cheap, but in the end it’s all worth it.
Some are setting up pathways, others are trimming the trees.
Some are already working on their own gardens,
even though we didn’t agree to that –
today we said we would all work together.
We had 10 items written down!
And none of them said:
“Individual garden work.”
However, all of them said:
“Teamwork to set up the pathways.”
Look at the great leadership we have, how they are taking care of us.
Look how hard they are trying.
Please, show a little faith in them.
They are really trying.
And so, this new opportunity came by: work first, get changed,
and then… gardening.
When we had to carry water from home it took a little longer.
But in the end you always find a way, and there is always more work.
Špela, look! If you know that you don’t have time,
that you aren’t capable of participating,
why do you get in over your head?
Your garden was clearly a mess.
Don’t give me that “I’ve got kids” talk!
I know how things work, I’ve got kids too, you know.
That’s the way I wanted it to be.
Here I often mention that old joke,
where a dog stands in front of a mirror,
and starts to show his teeth,
and the “other dog” also shows his teeth.
But, if he had started by wagging his tail...
This really is a social thing. A kind of community.
That’s what we’re all missing!
If I didn’t have a garden here,
I would probably be on the computer, Or I’d be watching television.
Or putting the curtains up and down for my wife.
And doing the vacuuming.
That’s not what life is about!
Life is about going out, into the fresh air!
And about spending time with people, right?
