Hey everybody it’s Scott Yonehiro with Ballistic Body Fitness. I’m here with BBF trainer
Beth Goldberg and we are going to show you how to do a bench press.
Alright now very important, when we are doing the bench press over here we are actually
doing it on the Smith machine. I prefer Smith machines and here at Ballistic Body Fitness
we definitely like to use the Smith Machine when it comes to chest work on the press simply
because it helps to alleviate any accidents or injuries on the shoulders.
One of the biggest problems you will find with the normal chest press is that once you
get tired, one side of your body is usually stronger than the other and that can cause
problems pushing, then you get a tear in the shoulder. So we are going to alleviate that
problem by using the Smith machine.
So Beth is going to go ahead and set up her grip right over here. Generally what she likes
to do, and everyone is different, she likes to take one thumb right at the edge of the
grip, fold it along and that’s her grip right there. She likes to take a false grip,
also known as a “thumb less grip” and keep the thumb on the same side as the fingers
and not a normal grip with the thumb on the opposite side of the fingers.
OK, now we’re going to take it off the Smith machine. She’s going to take it up, unhook
the rack, and then she’s going to bring it down into pressing position and then bring
it straight back up.
Now Beth is going to let those elbows come straight out to the side. Once again that
is very important because that is going to help open up the chest area. As the elbows
flare out it pulls the chest open and helps to fully maximize the stress on the chest.
So just as with any type of chest exercise when you are pressing any weight, you are
going to breathe in when you come down and breathe out when you come up and really get
that form down. And when you get that form down you can really find the strength within
the power of the breath.
