It's time for some fall fashion. TADA!!
I should probably call it autumn from now on.
[ ♪♪♪ ] Hi there, I'm Roberto.
Hope you guys are doing well. Last week a good acquaintance of mine, Joshua
J. Knowles asked this question on Twitter. Seriously, how did people even deal without
the Internet? This brought two thoughts to mind.
First, when a 21-year old is asking how people managed to live without the Internet, WOW
I'm way too fricken old! Back when I was 21, the Internet was barely
used as a research tool while in college. It was so far away from being the essential
part of our lives it is now. I did a video a couple of months ago about
how we manage to live when our Internet service goes down, but this time we're talking way
back when we didn't have Internet to begin with.
So, what was it like? Well, there were plenty of books to read and
encyclopedias you couldn't edit. I know, shocking!
But even when it comes to tech there were some options for entertainment and for connecting
with others. First we have the TV.
It wasn't like these flat, nice looking screens we have today; it was more like this, but
it did the job. It gave us our favorite shows, events and
cartoons. Then again, this was also before the days
of interactive program guides so if you didn't have cable you had to buy a weekly magazine
to check out the TV schedule, and if you had cable you had to tune in to a channel with
a scrolling program guide. And if for whatever reason you got distracted
and the channel you were interested in scrolled by...
ARGH! You had to wait for the guide to complete
the round and start all over. Ah, those were the days!
But people weren't going to settle with just watching TV.
That's what the Atari 2600, the NES, the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis were for, so
we could get our game on. Now when it comes to social networking, two
things played an important role. The first one was the telephone, the landline
telephone. It wasn't even something like this; it was
a bigger brick with a retractable antenna. But the real social component was 3-way calling.
Basically you could call a friend of yours and then call another one and join them into
a three way conversation. But if they had 3-way calling too, they could
each bring in another friend so up to six people could be talking in the same phone
call. The other important component in social networking
was the mall. It's going down; meet me in the mall!
The mall was THE place to hang out with friends. Depending on their interests people hung out
in clothing stores, the food court, electronics stores, gaming stores, the arcade.
My favorite place to hang out with my friends was in record stores.
Yeah, long before the iPods nobody uses anymore because, well all of our phones can play music
files just fine, we had cassettes and we had CDs.
And going to the store with your friends to browse the new releases, and some good oldies
too, was pure awesomeness. So yeah, that's pretty much how I lived and
managed to get entertained before we had this thing called the Internet.
But what about you? Can you imagine what you would do if the Internet
didn't exist? Or, if you are like me and you actually lived
those days, how did you do it? How did you get your information, your entertainment
and your social networking on? Let me know in the comments below.
