This presentation is based on the Earth Science unit on Global Climate Change. The first slide
gives you the Table of Contents: the Homepage, Introduction, Why is it important, the Objectives
and Standards, the Signs of Climate Change, Additional Resource and Evaluation and Sharing
As we know the Earth's climate is changing and people's activities are the main cause.
The Earth is getting warmer because people are adding heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere,
mainly by burning fossil fuels. Now why is the study of climate change important.
Climate Change AFFECTS You, Your Community, the World's Population, and the Environment.
Some of these impacts, like stronger hurricanes and severe heat waves, are life threatening.
Super Hurricane Sandy is an example. The next slide covers the National and the
Nevada Standards and Objectives focusing on the sciences inquiry based and the other benchmarks
that students will be achieving. What are the signs of climate change? The
signs of global climate change are all around us. It touches several areas;Health, Agriculture,
Energy, Water Supplies, Plants, Animals, and Ecosystems, Coastal Areas, and Recreation.
You can learn more about the effects and signs of climate change by clicking on the link
below. Next we go to greenhouse gases. These gases
are trapped in the atmosphere making the earth warmer. The increase in warmth is causing the
melting of glaciers. Let's look at the impacts. Rain patterns are
changing and the sea level is rising. As global temperatures continue to rise, we'll see more
changes in our climate and our environment. Look at the map of the world and you can see
the areas which are hardest hit. What is the impact of climate change? Scorching
summers, stronger storms and more flooding. Less rain can mean less water for some places,
and in other places too much of rain can cause terrible flooding. More hot days can dry up
crops and make people and animals sick. We now have some additional resources. The
main resource in this show is the NASA resource which is the climate kids at NASA.gov and
there is a quiz challenge on this website. We will look at evaluation and assessment.
You have to complete three items; the assessment quiz which is based on a a review of glossary
on climate change. We hve provided the website that has the glossary terms. Access that site
and familiarize your self with all the terms. Move on to watching the video titled climate
change basics . After you've watched it reflect on five new facts that you have learned. Post
a journal entry on your relections. Again, a website is provided. The third assignment
is based on "Global Warming, a Way Forward " facing climate change. What is your opinion
about the most effective way to move forward. Post your comments to the Discussion Board.
Review and comment on at least two of your classmates responses.
