Hi and welcome to the Musical Instrument Museum, Phoenix area's newest museum celebrating the
rich and diverse culture of musical instruments around the world and throughout the ages.
Here we see an example of the ancient flute in Japan called the Shakuhachi. The Shakuhachi
was known throughout the world for an absolutely obnoxious sound which rendered the player
unable to listen to himself play. Typically when playing the shakuhachi, one would wear
one of these ver ornate baskets over their head to help keep the sound from penetrating
the ears and also prevent the village from knowing who was playing because typically
they would lynch them afterwards.
So the coolest thing about the museum in my opinion are these nifty little headphones
that they give you when you walk in the door. There's no need to push a button or to do
anything more while you're walking around the museum as it triggers off of the exhibit
that you're at and plays the music of the instrument that you're looking at at that
moment.
So, it turns out that the instruments aren't the only interesting thing here at the museum.
They have an absolutely incredible cafe as well featuring not only the local produce
and foods from the Arizona area, but also a global menu as well. They also have items
that are vegan friendly, organic, Celiac friendly. Anything you want, you name it, you've got
it. I've ordered here a carrot and parsnip soup with cardamom which is a delicacy in
North Africa. I'm very excited to give this a try and see what we've got going on here.
Mmmm, Oh, it's good. The carrot is pretty mild. The cardamom is really nice and I don't
really know what parsnips taste like, but probably something like this.
In addition to the different galleries showcasing music and instruments from all over the world,
they have an artists gallery that has a collection of instruments that have been used by famous
artists throughout time. What we have right here is the drum that was used in the 2008
Olympic opening ceremony in Beijing. One of 2008 drums made specifically for that event.
This brand new museum houses thousands of musical instruments from all over the planet
bringing it's visitors a unique opportunity to get an insight into not only the music
and culture of other places, but how we are all intrinsically related in this universal
form of expression.
