The typical bicyclist don't realize why they should take this course and how it can benefit
them. They think it's not going to help them at all and it definitely does, you know, especially
the first class teaches them the rules and how to deal with traffic. The first course
we present them with some of the situations but they're very sheltered situations, because
a lot of times these are fairly inexperienced riders. By the time they get to this course
they're more experienced, they've had a chance to practice some of these principles and so
what I present them with is a bit of a challenge. I do tend to get a little bit more males in
this class because they're more interested in the mecanichal. Some people aren't so interested
in working on their own bikes but it gives them a better understanding of the bike itself
and stuff like that and they can go and talk to their mechanics, plus sometimes you're
out on the road and stuff and you don't have a mechanic. This may make the difference between
walking home and riding home. It gives them the basics lubricating and how to check for
chain wear and stuff like that. [people talking] A lot of people come to that class with the
perception they're out there at the mercy of the cars on their bicycle. Now one of the
things I teach them in that class is, you know, you're not. I'd like to be able to teach
all drivers to look out for bicyclists, that isn't going to happen. It's much better to
teach the cyclist to put yourself where the drivers are looking.
