You're listening to Love Space with Jeong Eun Young.
Every Tuesday night, we have people from around Cheong Ju come to the studio.
And for our staff... it's okay with you all if we do this in English right? Just kidding.
We checked with our guests and they said Korean was fine.
Joining us today is Caleb, from Canada, and Orion, from America.
Could the two of you please introduce yourselves?
Starting with Orion first? Hello Orion.
Yes, hello.
I rap in Korean with OTL Band.
-I'm from America and I've been in Korea for 6 years. -Oh really?
Yeah, 6 years. I like hip hop and reggae but I actually like trot (old style Korean music) a bit as well.
-Trot? Really? -Yes.
-And during the week, you teach at an elementary school right? -Yes.
And thank you for introducing the band as well, but what kind of band is OTL?
A group of people who like music just getting together and playing for fun?
Yeah, kind of just getting together and playing on the side.
We all have different jobs during the week.
I teach at an elementary school, but one band member is a student, so yeah we all do different kinds of work.
Oh really? What do the initials "OTL" stand for exactly?
-Haha well we all have stage names, but for example O is like my name. -Ah, O as in Orion.
-And yeah, we all have nicknames in the band. -So it's the first letters from all of your names?
-And as you know there's already an OTL symbol that means tired or exhausted. -Ah and so that's why you guys are OTL Band.
OTL Band, a group of music lovers who work during the week, but write songs, record, and perform together on the weekends.
You've just heard from Orion, the Korean rapper in the band OTL.
I've been told our next guest is not quite as strong in Korean, so let's see how we can make this work.
-From Canada, we have Caleb. Hello Caleb. -Hello.
-It's very nice to meet you. -Thank you. My name is Caleb and I'm from Canada.
I've lived in Korea for about 7 years.
-It sounds like your Korean isn't as good as Orion's, even though he's only been here for 6 years. -Yeah haha.
Thanks for speaking with us. As we just heard, Orion teaches at an elementary school.
Caleb Macivor, what kind of work do you do?
I'm an English teacher at LG Chemical and I run a home school at G-Well City.
Oh really? And Caleb told me before that these days, his major difficulty is with Korean.
How about you Orion? What kinds of difficulties are you having these days?
I think the most difficult thing these days is that we all live in different places, so it's hard to get all of the band together.
-Ah...so Caleb lives in Cheong Ju, and I thought Orion did too, but I guess you live in Seoul? -Yeah.
I live in Seoul and our other member, Carlo, who couldn't make it today, lives in Suwon.
-And so even though you guys all live apart, you get together and play on the weekends? -Yeah, that's right.
Wow, very cool. We've really been looking forward to the two songs that you're going to do for us today.
Which song are you going to do first?
We're going to do 청주사랑 (CJ Love) first.
-청주사람? (CJ Saram) -No, 청주사랑 (CJ Sarang). Love.
Ah, and so is this an original song?
Yes, the music was written mostly by Caleb.
And the lyrics are mostly Korean, so I wrote most of them, and Caleb wrote the English ones.
Oh really? Well we've been looking forward to hearing CJ Love for a long time now.
Let's do it.
And they're standing up haha gotta get the rhythm going. Here it is, CJ Love.
City of Cheong Ju, mmmmm. Wow.
It has a very free feeling to it. So music, lyrics, and when you recorded the song, who was on guitar?
Caleb plays the guitar and keyboards, and Carlo plays the drums.
Really? And where did you guys record the music?
-At our friend's house haha at Caleb's house. -Wow, real house music style then.
-Yeah. -Very cool.
I was really impressed by the lyrics too. Han Hyo-Ju Cheong Ju Love, Ban Ki-Moon almost Cheong Ju love.
Really great lyrics, and the music too.
-In the song you said that Cheong Ju is your second hometown. -Yes.
Where are your guys' hometowns?
Cheong Ju may be your second hometown, but I'm curious about where your hometown and where your families live. Orion?
My hometown is Los Angeles. All of my family lives there.
-Oh you must miss them a lot. -Oh...well it's okay.
Orion has become a full Korean now haha totally pulled in by Cheong Ju and Korea.
And Caleb, can you tell us something about your family?
Sure, I miss them.
I thought I was going to have to speak English for this interview. What would we have done with Orion here?
-Orion, do you have anything you'd like to say before we go? -Yes I do.
All of our band members lived in Cheong Ju when we came to Korea, which is why we wanted to make CJ Love.
-If you search for OTL Band on youtube, you can find us. -Oh really?
Yeah, and the video for the song we're about to sing, Maelong, on our youtube page.
The song you just did was CJ Love, and next is Maelong (the sound Koreans make when they stick their tongues out)? Maelong!
-Yeah maelong maelong haha but the CJ Love video will be up soon, so we hope you guys check it out. -Yes definitely.
And as for Caleb, he told me before that he hopes that OTL Band gains a lot of fans in Korea.
Our guests have requested we play some music here.
Ben Folds Five, The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, our guests say they like those artists.
Which one of those would you like to me play?
Well my favorite music is always changing, but I really like The Beatles,
Frank Sinatra and Ben Folds, so I'm requesting Army by Ben Folds.
Ah, Army by Ben Folds, yes I can see it here.
Caleb and Orion...
We can tell from your music that a lot of people love Cheong Ju,
and it's clear that you guys feel the same way. Very cool.
Thanks for your good will towards Korea and thank you Orion for coming down from Seoul to be here today.
I'm really curious about your Maelong song and music video. Who films your videos? Is it just going to be the OTL Band members?
Yeah we already filmed the Maelong video. Some friends of ours...
-18 Puppies -Right, the guys from 18 Puppies filmed it for us.
-Really? -Yeah they did a fantastic job.
Wow, we'll definitely have to look up OTL Band on the internet then.
Then before we play our last song, Maelong, let's say good bye to our two guests.
I want to thank you guys for coming and giving us a good show, especially Caleb for doing the interview in Korean.
-Thank you! -Thank you very much.
And now, here's Maelong.
