Hey there, welcome to another top 10 video thingy.
Over here in the UK, Gamecube wasn't a particularly popular system, so a lot of the time I wouldn't
know which games were good and which ones sucked, cos everyone in the whole country
had playstation 2 instead, so if there are some really amazing games I missed off the
list, I probably just didn't play them -- so feel sorry for me instead of calling me names
maybe? In order for a game to qualify, I have to
have played it, and if it's not exclusive, then the gamecube version must be the best
one I've played. Also, one per franchise, that's just how I
do things. Let's get on with it!
Number 10: Viewtiful Joe -- So there's this kid who's at the movies and he ends up getting
sucked into the film he;s watching and has to go through it, like Last action Hero, only
better because no one gets killed by an ice cream cone.
It's a sidescrolling beat em up with great design choices, tight controls and really
awesome combat. The art style is cool as all hell too. I can't
really think of a lot of negative things to say about it...which is good, cos it's in
my top ten and ***. Number 9: Donkey Konga -- Judge me all you
like, the main reason I play video games is to have fun, and Donkey Konga is amazingly
fun. I like most of the songs, even though they're cover versions that were presumably
recorded specially cos of copyright or some other dumb crap, and it's so satisfying when
you get the little gold "DK"s in the corner of the song title that let's you know your
performance was PERFECT! The mini games are pretty pointless, but meh, I still love this
game. *** guitar hero. Number 8: Pikmin -- I never got too far in
this game for the simple reason that I couldn't bear to leave any Pikmin behind to get eaten,
so I had to reset often, this lead to a lot of frustration.
This game is seriously cute, honestly, just look at Captain Olimar. Hell, just say the
name Captain Olimar a few times. Adorable. The graphics are charming, the puzzles are
fun to solve, there's a nice difficulty curve and it's just pain good. I haven't played
the sequels but pikmin 3 on wii-u looks amazing, seriously, I need to play that. Like right
now. Number 7: Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance -- Action
RPG with co-op, yeah! This game was awesome because you could load characters from other
files into your game, so you could use your friend's maxed out elf with all magic and
whatnot to just kill level 1 thieves and giant rats. So cool!
The gameplay is just straight up satisfying and enjoyable, the presentation is good too
with nice graphics, atmospheric music and lighting, and pretty solid voice acting.
I haven't played the second one. Was it any good? Let me know in the comments if it was
good. Number 6: Super Mario Sunshine -- This really
is one of the most gorgeous titles on the system. The graphics are amazing for 2002
and the world of Delfino Island is so colourful and charming that it gives you that pandora
depression that stupid people got after they saw avatar -- Basicaly what I'm saying is
-- Delfino Island -- way better than real life.
The controls are a huge improvement over super mario 64 -- They're basically the same, yet
refined to the point where they actually feel really natural and easy instead of floaty
and insane. The whole "cleaning up goo" thing can be repetitive
at times, but Mario Sunshine is just so damn lovely that it doesn't really matter.
Number 5: Metroid Prime -- Metroid was one the few big nintendo franchises that didn't
get a 3d updating for N64. So Prime was a long time coming for a lot of fans. In my
opinion, it was worth the wait. The dark, claustrophobic tone of the 2D Metroid's is
pushed to a much greater level. It kind of feel's like Ridley Scott's Alien.
Ridley, I just got that, holy ***! It has probably my favourite controls of any FPS
game, though I do love the controls for Bioshock Infinite. In spite of it's "hardcore appeal"
or whatever, it's very easy to pick up and play. Much like doom or goldeneye, it's the
kind of game that you can enjoy even if you're not a fan of first person shooters. I haven't
actually played the other two prime games, I really should. If they're anything like
this one, I'm sure they're amazing. Number 4: Resident Evil -- Atmosphere, graphics,
puzzles, scariness, Resident Evil for Gamecube is a damn near perfect horror game. The pre-determined
camera angles and amazing lighting give it a cinematic feel and the presentation wasn't
just impressive in 2004, it's still impressive almost ten years later.
The 2 campaigns are sufficiently different to warrant a playthrough of each at least
once and the puzzles are challenging enough to make you feel pride when you solve them,
but they're never so difficult that you get pissed off and want to stop playing.
Jumpscares are used to good effect, they heighten the atmosphere rather than being used in place
of one like so many modern horrors. It's slow pace might not be for everyone, but it's my
personal favourite in the series. Number 3: Eternal Darkness -- While its presentation
may be lacking when compared to other titles on the system (it did start life as an N64
game before development was moved to cube) Eternal Darkness delivers an intriguing, lovecraft
y craftian
lovecraftian story, yeah that's a word. The combat is head and shoulders above most
survival horrors of the time...though that is damning it with faint praise I guess. It
also has this cool sanity gimmick that *** with your game, making for a pretty trippy
experience. If you have a gamecube or wii and this game passed you by, you really should
play it, cos it's bloody great. Just don't play it alone
at night with all the lights off
like I did. Not a single wink of sleep was attained!
Number 2: Super Smash Bros. Melee -- As I said in my N64 countdown video thing, Smash
Bros is designed primarily to settle pub disputes about whether Donkey Kong could best Pikachu
in a fight. This tradition continues with its fantastic
sequel Super Smash Bros Melee. They improved on the first game so much, people often forget
there even was a first game, like street fighter 2...only more justifiable cos it doesn't have
a big number 2 on the box. More characters, more stages, better multiplayer,
event matches, those weird trophy things that serve no function but you really *** want!
Everything in this game is so awesome, it's like having Michelle Rodriguez choke you and
massage your prostate while David bowie watches withsome thousand Island, what the *** was
I talking about? Number 1 - Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
-- As much as I hate being predictable, Wind Waker deserves the number 1 spot
I love being predictable because it's doubtlessly my favourite gamecube
game. The graphics are stunning for the time and you can traverse a truly vast world without
any loading issues. You hear that Bathesda? It can be done...stop with your ***!
The controls are tight, finally adding proper camera control to the 3d zelda games. Come
to think of it, several games on, this still has the best camera of any 3d zelda....what's
up with that? The story is epic, with a sombre bitter-sweet
feeling - Like Majora's Mask, only actually suitable for children.
I haven't played the remake yet, but I hear it's even better, so we should all surrender
to Nintendo and buy the wii-u just to experience more Wind Waker.
Because *** yeah, Zelda
