Welcome to Investment and Development. Today's topic is Chapins Fair 2,011.
and for that to my right accompanies us Juan Luis Martinez, president of the Chapins Fair
and beside him is Mr. Victor Gramajo General Manager of the fair.
Welcome to Investment and Development.
Thank you very much Luis, it's a pleasure to be here tonight. Thank you for the space that is being given to Chapins Fair
Thank you for being here.
How did Chapins Fair emerges, when and where is realized?
Everything began in 2,005. The first time that we had the opportunity to make the fair
in the city of Inglewood, to be precise the week that honors the Guatemalan immigrant
or the arrival of the Guatemalan immigrant to California City and thats how our odyssey began.
Then in 2,006 I find the second fair and it is where I knew Juan Luis Martínez
Who got thrilled with this dream and this adventure and adds to this ship.
Thanks God today we are in the 7th. edition in California and the 2nd. in New York.
Actually, where will the Chapins Fair 2,011 be? So that the general public know
in case they want to participate and even going to know.
Thanks, we are still making it in Hollywood, Park Casino that is in the city of Inglewood.
7th. consecutive year. that a local very suitable to perform the show
has more than 20,000 parking spaces, the facilities are near the airport.
To our expositor continues being very strategic the geographical position of this locality.
What sectors are currently involved in Chapins Fair 2,011, Juan Luis,
the great Central American Pavillion?
We have a variety of companies participating or categories as we say.
Food, banking, real estate, supermarkets, food and beverages
Central American beverages are are loved by immigrants.
We have the banking area also. All the companies that are performers
that provide services to the immigrant for his satisfaction in the U.S.A
and their families here in Guatemala.
What are the benefits that brings to the participating companies,
to people coming to visit Chapins Fair and the country in general?
The realization of this type of great events that leaves the name of Guatemala and Central America high.
Effectively fairs are one of the cheapest ways of marketing to get to alot of people.
That is one of the advantages that has been given by Chapins Fair and the Central American Pavillion
that allows the companies attending the fair, be able to have a direct approach
with the potential customer. The organization that is made from the fair that begins the day after the fair ends
it takes a 9-month process, during which works hard
not only acquiring expositors but also training them on how they should participate
in serial events of this nature. That level of training we give, the organization that we have
has enabled us to be qualified by the U.S.A. Media
as the most prestigious Central American event. It is a great honor and great responsibility
as Guatemalans all that the event be better, every year be better.
Victor, what has been the level of participation of Guatemalans and Central American people
according to the fairs that have been made from 2,005 to 2,010
and what are your expectations for this year of the people participation and the general public to come to the fair?
I think the response of the Guatemalan community has been very favorable for us
since today, we're expecting 60,000 people in this seventh edition.
I think we have reached to a multiplier 10 times that began the fair.
It has been very satisfying to see the answer and believe that it is a combination of satisfactions of steps that we have achieved
the team of EVEFER or Chapins Fair to achieve in making the fair very professional.
I think that as Juan Luis said the fair is currently cataloged in the U.S.A
as the best event organizationally speaking
and that is the response and satisfaction that we have today.
Since 2,008 it has been including the concept of the Great Central American Pavillion.
In what it consists and how it benefits not only to Guatemala but also to the region?
We have identified with the past of time Over time this
in the research we have made, that we have developed
that the Central American community is very united in some way in the U.S.A.
Obviously for the nostalgic part, sentimental relationships, trade relations exist between them
and we also saw that people from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico and other nations visited us.
Thats when we decided to include the Central American Pavillion
so that they join this boat, not only with the Guatemalan or Chapin vision
but with a more regional.
Juan Luis, now we see that the Guatemalan Fair is having a business conference area
In what consists the business conferences and how this benefits the business participants?
This is a very good initiative of the Ministry of Economy who operate the software for the business conferences?
Who organize for exhibitors participating in the fair
have activity, not only in exposition but business to business
Through these conferences they make a number of approaches, contacts and business.
This year may reach to $40 million generated by commercial activity in the 4 days period of the fair.
Victor, how have you seen this great benefit of Chapins Fair
for Guatemalans and now for the Central Americans in order to have a great growth
in Guatemala's economy and of the region?
I think that the approach is definitely commercially speaking positive
since the remittance becomes a much direct investment.
no longer has the steps that before happened of sending it to family and friends
and these reach the entrepreneur. I think that shortening the distance
destination of shipment, resulting in a obviously smart investment and development.
What would be your final message, you Victor as the creator and founder of the fair?
with that vision of empowerment to be able to link between Guatemala
and the nostalgic market in the U.S.A. and now the Central American market
and the U.S.A. market for the economic and social development grow?
I think that the message here is double, our fellow citizen who lives or reside in the United States
they know or who know they have the opportunity of involving their family
in a commercial or economic development and likewise generate or the remittance or effort from them
sees as a generator remittance . The other part of the message definitely has it the family here in Guatemala
know that the money or the remittance, the efforts made by their families
in sending this family remittances definitely behind this there is a sacrifice.
I think there are opportunities of converting it in development for our country
and seeing a Guatemala thats growing and moving forward and continuing developing
in all the participatory axes of the Guatemalan community.
Juan Luis, what would be your final message as president of Chapins Fair
and also see the expansion of the same great Central American Pavillion
in order for it to be a great Central American and Caribbean Pavillion
and why not viewing it later for it to be at a Latin American level even the Great Pavillion?
Definitely the final message is that this 25th, 26th, 27th and August 28th
expect the presence of all the community that is in California, and some distant states and other closer
that come to the fair and accompany us with their families, friends
learn more of our culture.
There are people that have many years of not coming to Guatemala, even their children
were born there and don't know much of our culture and the Central American culture.
Here they are going to see everything inside a regional authentic atmosphere
and we hope it continues growing, as you say other countries that are countries of
Latin America that can join this effort we are doing each year.
We are expecting to see all in this great event which begins August 25th.
Juan Luis, Victor congratulations for believing in this Guatemalan market that has a great future.
Seeing it with a Central American expansion level that has a great future
for the development of our nation that needs it so much. We wish you success in your management.
Thank you Luis, the same to you in this innovative program.
Thanks, we are going to a break and then we will continue with Investment and Development
We continue with Development and Investment in this second segment we are accompanied by
Rolando Pineda Lam he is president of the company Mercadeo Inmobiliario and by skype
with Mr. Juan José Tánchez he is Marketing Manager of the company El Zeppelin.
Welcome to Investment and Development.
Thank you very much and greetings to the audience of Investment and Development.
Mr. Rolando, in what consists Mercadeo Inmobiliario so that the general public have knowledge?
Mercadeo Inmobiliario is a developing company of projects in Guatemala
particularly and specifically dedicated to family recreation
and are founded primarily in the literal coastal area of Santa Rosa and the department of Escuintla.
How many times have your company participated previously in Chapinas Fairs that have been made
and what are the objectives you have achieved?
We have participated in the 6 previous fairs that have been made in Los Angeles, this will be the 7th. participation.
We also participated in the 2 editions that were made in New York.
Our objective is very puntual and is to take them the facility to our countrymen
living in the U.S.A. to buy a piece of land
of Guatemala through developments we promote.
The truth is that the results have been very good, that's why we have continued participating
throughout all the editions of the fair. The participation of the Guatemalans is very exciting.
We have created mechanisms that have been improved so that them from there
they can pay their land in Guatemala and so they can have a real estate. That is not only an
immediate investment it is them that have it as a long-term vision when everyone has the nostalgia
of returning back one day to their land
and being able to make their life again and why not also put businesses and homes in that part.
Indeed it is.
What have seen the new oportuniodades that can be found in the new edition of Chapins Fair 2,011?
I think the new opportunities is that each year the fair continues growing
in Los Angeles, the involvement or assistance of our fellow citizens
is higher and that makes the market much wider.
Now that the organizers integrated since 2 editions ago the so called
"Great Central American Pavillion" as well opens the opportunity for products
from other countries. We particularly have a development in the area of Santa Rosa.
The name is Monte Rico it has good acceptance from the Salvadoranian community.
They also reach there massively and share with our countrymen and enjoy the Chapins Fair
each year.
What has been the experience that you have had over these 6 years?
and what would be your message to those companies for them to see the great potential for business?
you mentioned in the previous block of business conferences of $40 million
to actually see that there is great potential of growth not only for company
but also of the region?
The potential is unlimited and we don't have it well visualized.
Now they are talking about this year that remittances will be in the order of US$400,500,000
and that's just what our fellow citizens send to their family members in Guatemala.
We are not taking into consideration of what is spend or with what they stay in the U.S.A.
so that it is a strong market potential
particularly now that was announced that in November
will be again the edition in New York since the New York market is
much in socioeconomic level better than the California area
because obviously, around the big apple
the income obtained are far greater.
Then perhaps a small quantitative market but qualitatively very strong
so that the possibility and potential for making business is unlimited because I also believe
there is a large mass of Guatemalans that want to find Investment funds
or investment opportunities here in Guatemala or a kind of joint venture.
Making them a part in the United States and another part the Guatemalan businessmen.
Mr. Juan José, what type of business is "El Zeppelin" dedicated and what markets it covers in Guatemala?
My name is Juan Jose Tánchez I am Commercial Manager of "El Zeppelin, S.A."
it is a company with 65 years of work in the Central American market.
We have 6 retail stores of our products.
Our main lines are the line of knitting of point of underwear,
for babies, boys, girls ladies and gentlemen.
As I mentioned currently we are in our stores.
It begins with the distribution to wholesalers across the country and the rest of Central American countries and Panama.
Our plan is to expand entering to new markets.
Since we consider that the quality conditions of our product and our service strategies
may be favorable in order to grow in other countries.
How many years does the company"El Zeppelin" has been participating
and what achievements have you obtained through all the business conferences that have been implemented?
For "El Zeppelin" this year 2,011 is the fourth opportunity that we are participating
in Chapins Fair. In the year was 2,008 was our first experience, something very interesting.
We could see the great demand and how important is the nostalgia market.
How people remember the brands of their homeland with much love and well identified.
was a market, that somehow we have not often understood in the commercial area
but it's something with lots of potential, worth trying, it has been an experience
gratifying, challenging for our company
We believe it is something that has to be done and be present as a brand development.
What types of products are the most solicitated in Chapins Fair
by our brothers from Central America from "El Zeppelin" company?
As the demand of the products the advantage of our company is that people
somehow maintains contact with the buying of products with relatives living here
Within the classical things are our striped towel shirts
There is the underwears, underwear for children socks, all types of T-shirts for babies,
baby pajamas, hats, and the wide range that produces "El Zeppelin"
swimsuits also. It has been with what people have identified us most
for many years and it showed the demand that people have
on these different lines of Chapins Fair.
Following your previous participation in Fair Chapina,
what would be your expectation with Chapins Fair 2,011 and the Great Central American Pavillion?
What we seek at this moment be able to formalize our marketing channels
in a interesting market as this nostalgia market.
I believe it is something to be developed, we must work.
It is within the company's plans being able to handle it either from our own shop
or through some distributors that comply with the conditions
that we require in order to become a distributor in a country like this.
Excellent business opportunity that we see that we can made
in the version of Los Angeles and the edition that will be made in New York.
Mr. Rolando, thank you very much for being here in Investment and Development
and Juan Luis Tánchez thanks for joining us.
We will go to a break and then continue with Investment and Development.
We continue Investment and Development.
In this third segment we are accompanied by the Minister of Economy of Guatemala
Luis Velasquez Quiroa and also by Mr. David Obregon
He is a craftsman entrepreneur, welcome to Investment and Development.
Thank you for this opportunity.
What is the great benefit it brings to Guatemala and the Central America region
to realize this type of major events?
Well first we must recognize that immigrants are our anonymous heroes
They are sending to Guatemala around US$45,000,000 in remittances annually
and represent about 2 million abroad.
If we take in account Central America and Dominican Republic we would be talking of about 8 million
of imigrants that are contributing with US US$12,600,000 in remittances.
This means very important elements for the economic and social development
for which we have established a policy as country, through the Ministry of Economy.
Support great events like the one of Chapins Fair that is the event of Central American and Latin American
the largest in the United States.
In what consists the support you are giving to PYMES, micro, small and medium enterprises
so that they can participate in this type of events?
One of the fundamental pillars that have consolidated in the Ministry of Economy is the support and promotion
to the micro, small and medium enterprises They represent about 88% of Internal Gross Earnings of our economy
and also it is necessary to create a MIPYMES program for immigrants
Then we dream big, we have 2 million Guatemalans in the United States
We have US $4,453 million that we receive annually in foreign exchange remittances.
We have a very high potential
and in that sense our contribution is consists
of 10 stands for 10 producers that are traveling to exhibit their products
in training them, in business conferences.
We are sending a very professional team of the Ministry Economy to give support to this event.
You as an entrepreneur of the sector of handcrafts, how have you seen this great potential that can be given in Guatemala
in the region and now venture in the nostalgia market in the U.S.A.?
Thanks for the space, the opportunity of being able to express on behalf of many craftsmen
from Guatemala, in first place thank the Ministry of Economy especially to the Minister of Economy
for the opportunity given to us to take our products
we can say nostalgic for our fellow citizens outside the country,
since in their case there are some who can not come here to their country for a certain period of time
Take them their products apart from that to let them know our crafts
that don't have no competition in terms of colors, designs and prices,
that are within the reach of many pockets. Trying the way to cover, a market where not only consumption
of Guatemalans, as the nostalgic consuimidor but also introduce of our culture
internationally.
Excellent business opportunity that will be seen in Los Angeles California.
What are the products that our Central American brothers and Guatemalans be able to find
in the crafts area for example?
In the area of crafts we have a very wide range, all thats textiles
and what is textiles we are converting it in useful product
Not only what we were used to see that was only ornamental.
Mr. Minister, what has been the recognition that you have received at national and international level
of this type of fairs that are being carried on?
Chapins Fair has been recognized and I affirm what I said earlier as the largest fair in a Latin American country
in the United States.
It is the most potential when it comes to assistance. It has about 75 thousand people for this year.
It is the only one that has a Central American Pavillion and it's anticipating in having a Latin American Pavillion.
In addition of its edition in Los Angeles that already have 7 fairs and 2 in New York.
We are willing to support as the Ministry of Economy the Chapins Fair in Los Angeles,
Chapins Fair in New York and the Chapins Fair in Florida.
This represents a significant impact for the economy of Guatemala,
the image of Guatemala also abroad and to support these immigrants that are our anonymous heroes.
Additionally, you will know that besides Guatemalan television channels,
will be present net work channels like Tele Mundo, Univision, CNN, etc.
That means a very important element and recognitions.
What has been your experience Mr. David, having participated before in Chapins Fair?
For me it is the first opportunity that I have to participate in Chapins Fair
but I have always participated through Ministry of Economy in other fairs
and experiences have been very good,
The results very good. I give you an example at least nationally
I participated in the Euro Expo and I'm still receiving after a year and a half
we are still receiving benefits of the participation in the Euro Expo.
Mr. David, what would be your final message to all the craftsmen,
all producers of various products that are made in Guatemala and Central America
united that are identified in our region so they see that there is great potential
through fairs, through different great events that are being made at a level
Latin American, at an American, so there business opportunity and there be growth
much-needed economically in our region?
This is an extensive issue
I encourages them not to lose the habit
of craft, and train for example: young people with social risk, women in social risk.
Trained them so they can continue with our customs, with our crafts.
because that is something that identifies us.
We see that even you have a program with which you are doing through the crafts that help people
so they can guide again to redirect to society.
Exactly thats what we are trying to do, to give, trying to create, innovate
and delegate functions to other individuals and families more than anything.
The ones that we support more are the women in social risk.
Mr. Minister of Economy, what would be your message for all the national and international audience
and the entrepreneurs to encourage them to continue forward in this type of great events
which will bring a great business development opportunity
of our country and of our region?
Well I think here is different messages, first to our national and international audience
to attend to this Chapins Fair to increase even
the number of visitors to more than 75,000 because they will have the opportunity of recieving that magic,
that color, that wonder of what it is Guatemala, nostalgic products,
which will surely be a recognition to our immigrants abroad.
Second to the Guatemalan businessmen and international entrepreneurs to support this type of events,
encourage entrepreneurship, trade, but are also be looking for new markets
for our producers, as it is in this occasion Mr. David and many other producers
that have great potential, who want to show all the products that we have
and definitely be available to to be at the reach of the Guatemalan and Latin American brothers
who are as immigrants in the United States of America.
And the third element to the communication media that this type of events
and here I thank Investment and Development for allowing us this opportunity
that promotes, because Guatemala need to be shown to the world
with all the entrepreneurship that are its people, with the wonders we have
and how capable we can be when we make team work.
This is a real sample, businessmen that organizes a Chapins Fair.
Different institutions that integrate
sponsors, we as a government through the Ministry of Economy
when we make this team work, definitely we organize events that are Summa *** Laude
world-class that integrates us in mayor scale
to Guatemala, Central America, the Caribbean
and of course with its fellow citizens in the U.S.A.
where they also share the economic and social development.
Mr. David, congratulations for having the vision of wanting to participate and expand your market
beyond Guatemala and Mr. Minister, we encourage you to go continue forward
supporting this type of events that brings great benefits to Guatemala and the region.
Thank you for being with us in Investment and Development.
Thanks to you too.
