Hello and welcome back to Friday Minis! Today, we nitpick on use of English!
So here's the deal. Today I'm talking about the words "Disc" and "Disk". Well, the two
words sound almost exactly the same, they spelt with a one-letter difference, but really,
from a technical standpoint, there are actually some subtle differences between these two
terms.
Now, if you think about it, the definition of these two terms share a lot in common.
You know, both terms refer to pieces of hardware, these hardware tend to provide storage capability,
and yet, there is a subtle difference between each of these terms.
For example, you'll never hear someone say a "Hard Disc". Similarly, you'll never hear
someone refer to a CD as a "Compact Disk". Here's the reason why:
Now the difference between these two terms might have been ambiguous a long time ago,
but over time, it has evolved to take some kind of significance.
DISC, that is the spelling with a "C" at the end, actually only refers to optical devices.
This means that when we're referring to CDs, we use the term "Disc".
And conversely, when we actually refer to magnetic storage, you know, a floppy DISK,
a hard DISK, that is when we use the variant of the word that ends with "K".
Why am I bringing this up? I don't know! This is just something that I felt like it should
be clarified. I feel like people tend to instinctively use the correct term, perhaps out of habit.
But still, it is good to know that there is an actual distinction.
