Welcome to a brief tutorial on finding an article in an electronic database.
This tutorial will walk you through accessing the multi-disciplinary database Academic Search
Complete and finding the full-text of an article for your English 102 article review essay.
Let's get started. From the Wichita State
homepage, click on Libraries under the Academics column. Under the Library Resources column
on the left, click Electronic Databases. Scroll down to Academic Search Complete and click
on the hyperlink.
Let's say your topic is on text messaging as a form of communication and how some experts
believe that text messaging is hampering the development of language skills and literacy.
You'll need to pick some keywords to use for searching. We could try "text messaging"
and literacy. Here are a couple of tips for effective searching - put quotation marks
around phrases like "text messaging" and use these multiple search boxes to connect
your keywords. Using the AND in this dropdown box will make sure we get articles that are
about both "text messaging" and literacy.
Since you're only looking for one article,
you can click here to limit your results to only articles with the full text available.
If you need many sources for a longer paper, don't limit to full text only or you might
miss out on some really great articles.
Here are your results. To read the abstract, or summary, of an article, hover your mouse
over the magnifying glass.
Click on the title of the article to view more information about it, including these
hyperlinked subject terms you could use to find even more articles on your topic. Click
on PDF full text to view the article. From here, you can print your article or save it
to a flash drive. You can also email it to yourself by clicking on this envelope icon.
Academic Search Complete will also create a citation if you click on the little yellow
paper icon. Scroll down to MLA and copy and paste the citation into your paper. Make sure
you check the citation for accuracy before you turn in your essay!
You can find out more information on evaluating
the article you find in the Evaluating Articles with the CAARP Test video on the English 102
library research guide.
If you have any questions, please stop by Ablah Library or contact a librarian.
