>> MALLEN: Well today we're opening Downley Village Hall, which has now become a Community
Centre, and it's taken a lot of years to change it, from being an old school house, nearly
140 years old, been in the community for a long time, it was a bit dull and rundown and
the Community Centre association took it over and used it as a library and a few rooms and
they've gradually renovated it over the last eight years. I've helped with some of my Community
Leaders fund to do flooring and things and now it's a really beautiful facility and people
are really enjoying seeing it and using it. We've got a new kitchen, they've used an old
boiler room and changed it and renovated it, and it's got some beautiful equipment in there,
for large scale catering. It's got sinks and everything so you can have, coffee and tea
in any of the rooms, it's got a very good library, all run by volunteers, and it helps
to keep the community together. People come here for sports and it used to have children
having parties here, and all the community is starting to realise what a good facility
this is, and it's starting to be used quite a lot now, it was always used and now more
people from around the district are using it.
>> GAY: And you can all see today, the huge tremendous strides that we've made, in two
years in getting this building to where we are today. It's a grand old building and I
think that now it's of full benefit to the local community.
>> VOICEOVER: This time next year the building will have actually served the community for
140 years, there's no reason now that with a little bit of support it can't be around
for the next 140 years.
