Hey, everyone.
Thanks for stopping by for another PoopGamer review.
My name is Michael and this week we'll be taking a look
at "Oden Cart: A Heartwarming Tale",
also known as "An Oden Tale".
So before I jump into this video,
I just wanted to the point out that this game does have a perpetual banner ad at the
bottom of the screen and the occasional short video pop-up ad that I'll be
removing from the footage as to not detract from the gameplay itself.
There's also a giant "Recommendations" button that just plays a short video ad when clicked
that serves no other purpose and takes up valuable screen real estate.
Oden Tale is an idle visual novel game that has you taking on the role of an oden cart vendor.
As the night goes on, customers trickle in for an after-work or late-night snack
and share with you gripes of their daily lives.
The more you listen to a particular person's gripes, the more their loyalty increases and with that,
they begin to open up and begin sharing their troubles with you and more importantly,
the stories of who they are.
The end-goal of the game is to unlock everyone's happy ending, none of which I've gotten yet
in time for the review, so sorry I can't show you any of that.
As for the gameplay, there's really nothing there.
There's no real restaurant simulation aspect of the game, as the
oden cart itself only serves as a means of talking to the customers.
Money doesn't really matter since if you were rarely playing and doing poorly,
there are free restock options to ensure you get to experience a bowl game no matter what happens.
This game is all about the one-on-one experience.
There is something about sitting down and just listening to your customers' daily gripes
and discovering new ones.
But if you're in a rush, there are no worries.
Gripes stay around for 12 hours before they stop giving you points so you don't have to spend hours on end
tapping bubbles to progress.
As for the character development, that's something I really like about this game.
A lot of the characters seemed one-dimensional at the beginning or you may just disagree or
dislike them for certain reasons but as they open up, you get to see a
different side of them and maybe you start to understand why they came off as
cold or unreasonable when you first met them.
Oden Tale is probably one of the slower, chiller games that I've played.
It's more of a fly-on-the-wall experience as you're just there
while the experience progresses and unfolds around you.
You don't really influence anything since your role as the vendor is just to be someone that's there to listen
as the characters themselves reflect on their actions and choices.
So if you're looking for something more exciting, then this is probably not something for you.
I wouldn't even say it's recommendable for someone who generally likes visual novels
since most visual novels either give you some control over the story or you use some false sense of control.
But if you're looking for a heartwarming story and have a few minutes to spare each day,
then maybe this is something you'd want to check out.
As it stands right now, I'm giving it a 4 out of 10 but maybe that will change.
I intend on getting at least one happy ending in this game and maybe
I'll make a follow-up video if I feel that it was worth the effort.
As always, thanks for watching.
