The Szeged Paprika exhibition at the museum features the history of the famous spice known
worldwide as paprika powder. From the very first appearance of a red pepper in Szeged,
through the different stages of development it takes to process, in order to get paprika.
The first document that mentions this red pepper in Szeged dates back to 1748. The plant
was largely decorative, but later its physiological effects were discovered and used for medicinal
purposes, primarily to cure rheumatic diseases. It was a hundred years later that people started
using the plant as an herb. Now and days, the Szeged paprika powder is sold all over
the world. What makes Szeged paprika so unique, is the plant used to manufacture the spice.
Its been breed through decade long selections, targeting the color, the taste, and the aroma
as its major factors. Another consideration, is the soil it's grown in, this particular
pepper likes the soil by the river Teza. A final factor may be the love and expertise
of the locals and their devotion to the red pepper plant.
