Hi, my name’s Stuart
and this is a quick video on how to create a Montage app on Windows
I’m using Windows 8 but the steps will be similar on Windows 7
If you want to run Montage in Internet Explorer you will need version 10
or of course you can use any other modern browser
I’m going to go quite quickly, so you may want to pause the video as you follow along
First I'm going to install Node and NPM
If you already have Node installed you can click the caption to skip ahead
Head over to nodejs.org
and click the Install button, and then the Run option
In case you’re unfamiliar, Node is the program that runs Javascript
and NPM is a package manager that installs
Javascript libraries and programs for your projects
Both come together in the download
This is a regular Windows installer, so you can just click through
Because it’s installing new commands on your computer
you will need to accept the administrator dialogs
Now we’re ready for Montage
For the next steps I need to open the Command Prompt
Press the Windows key and type “run”
In the Run dialog type “cmd”
standing for “command”, and press enter.
I need to check that NPM has been set up correctly
so enter “npm” and press enter
If you get an error instead of this help text
then I found that logging out and logging back in again fixes it
All the commands that I type now are in our Getting Started guide
linked in the description, so you can copy and paste them.
To make it easy to create new Montage apps
we’ve created Minit, the Montage Initializer
I'm using the "-g" option to install the minit command globally
so that it's available from any folder
To create a new app called “hello” I use
`minit create:app --name hello`
It creates a new directory called hello
and downloads the latest version of Montage
If I list the folder you can see the files needed for the app
To view the app I need a webserver
If you haven't got one set up already there’s a simple webserver called Mongoose
It’s available at https://code.google.com/p/mongoose/
I’ve saved it in my downloads, and then run it
By default it serves the folder that it’s in
so to change this I right click on tray icon, click Settings
and need change the document_root setting to be my “hello” app
and then click save
Now when I go to “localhost:8080” the welcome app is shown
And this is where I’m going to leave you
The instructions on the welcome page
will introduce you to making changes to a Montage app
If you have any questions come and and ask us
in the #montage IRC channel on the freenode network
or on our Google Groups mailing list
Thanks very much for watching!
