hi, I'm Bill Myers and this is another of my video tips of the week
In this week's video tip, I'm going to show you how to get great chromakey with Sony Vegas
Movie Studio
and also how you where you can get get the virtual TV studio background that I use in a lot of my
chroma key
clips. This is the background right here. But first let me show you how to get a
great-looking chroma key in Sony Vegas Movie Studio
First thing you want to do is to bring the clip that you want to add chroma key
to up on the time line. You want to put this on a track above where the
background is going to be. And this is what that clip it looks like.
when I shot this a shot this with a pop-up blue screen background you can
see I've got some the edges here
and in order to resolve that, what I'm going to do is select pan and crop
with pan and crop selected I'm going to zoom in just a little bit a background
you can see is a zoom in here
until it fills the screen. So there's the background. Next thing I want to do is apply the
chromakey effect.
I click the icon here for event effect
And on effect effects, the first thing I select is Sony color corrector
secondary, and then I'm going to select Sony chroma blur
and then I select Sony chroma keyer. And you see all those show up here on the top
line
so with those three effects, the first thing I'm going to do is turn off chromakeyer
and I will turn off the chroma blur because we'll use those later, and that shows us our
talent on screen with a blue background and now using the color corrector
secondary
I will use a preset. now in a previous video tip I showed you how to add this preset
the studio RGB the computer RGB
so that's what we're going to use. When I click that, watch the screen over here as the
colors change
and you see how to change they made the blue bluer
made the skin tones more realistic and made all the colors pop
and that's important because when you use chroma key you want those colors to
be solid. now that I've got that, I'm going to go to chroma blur
click that on. I'm going to go to about 190 on chroma blur
what that does is blurs the pixels
just slightly so that when I apply chroma key there won't be a sharp
pixelation on the colors themselves and you can see it didn't make a difference the
picture
now the next thing we're going to do is chronic keyer, and I click that
and notice that I still have chroma keyer unchecked and that's important at
this point because what I want to do is select a color
and if I have the chromakeyer checked, and I'll turn it on, you can see the background
color goes black
and with background colors black I won't be able to choose color, so turn that off
and it shows the actual background. I use my color picker here, just click on it
you can see there's a eye dropper selection that you come over and pick a color close to
the talent. I pick the color right there
now that the color is picked, I can turn chromakeyer on
and you can see that it has chromakeyed out the background but because nothing
behind it, it shows black
and that's what we want right now because we're going to go to show
mask only, and click that and it shows us what is going to be masked out
and what we want is the foreground here to be all white
the way we do that as we bring out low threshold, and we drop the high
threshold
we adjust these until we get the look that we want, and then on a blur amount which is
the next slider down, we want to bring the blur amount up a little bit
we don't bring it too much, which you can see if we bring the way too much
blurs everything. We just want to reduce the sharp pixels around the edge
And when we have it the way we want, what we'll do is uncheck that
and you can see we did a pretty good job. Of course we won't be able to tell
how a good a job we do until we bring in the background and I'm gonna do that now
so I'm going to close this window
this is my virtual studio backgrounds I'm just going to drag it up here
and drag it to the full-length of the clip and we can see here by looking at the clip
that we really did a pretty good chroma key job it looks really nice and sharp
And if I play the clip
you can see the through the motions you doing the chroma key still look really
sharp. I'll stop it right here.
Look how nice and sharp an edge that we have and even the
the mesh background on this chairs is showing a really nice chroma key
even there hair on the cat is coming out really well
that's the easy way to get a great chroma key again the way that I did that
was on the video effect, I applied for 4 effects, I applied, color corrector secondary
where we apply the studio RGB to computer RGB. I applied
chronic blur, and then chroma keyer, and it gave us great results
now as I promised earlier, I'm going to show you where to get this virtual studio
background, I'll put this on the screen so you can see what it looks like
what this is is a looping background
and it looks like a TV studio
and you can put anything in front of this and it'll make it look
a lot more professional and not just like with his woman with a cat we put her in
the TVstudio
and it makes her look a lot more professional. So it
is nice to have this chromakey background and you can get it
free. To get this this virtual studio background
what you want to do is to go to movie tools
dot info. this is what the movie tools info screen will look like
when you get there scroll down until you see the free content navigation
the left hand side of the screen and click on video background loops
when you do that you'll see a number background loops including Christian
loops, countdown loops
energy loops, flag loops, holiday loops music loops and news
in studio loops. that's what you want to click on, the news and studio
loops. when you get there you'll see that they have a number
background loops for studios. they have a red studio loop
and they have the blue globe loop and the news intro loop
and below that they have loop 144 which is the red news studio loop and that's the one
you want
and to get that you scroll down and click download in sd free
and that'll download to your computer and you have the loop that you can use. now while
you're here you may also want to look at the other loops they have, for example if
you're looking
for holiday loops, you can click that link and you see that they have loops for
different holidays that you can use as backgrounds
or they have sports loops if you're doing a sports video you might need a
football loop or basketball loop softball or soccer
they're all these are free to use in sd standard definition format
now they also sell loops in the loops as you can see here, the quality is pretty
good
anyway, to get that studio loop, go to movietools.info
go down to news studio loops, scroll down to the bottom page until you see the loop
144 red new studio
and that's the loop you want. once downloaded that you can add it to movie studio, and you can
can get results that
look like that. Anyway I'm bill Myers and I thought you might be interested in
