He reached the pinnacle of the Sabanci Group, which he had joined in 1961.
He has proven that family-owned Turkish giants can be run by professionals.
After having left the Sabanci Group with tears, the business world is still after him.
Hasan Gulesci is Finance Cafe's guest today. Welcome sir.
Thank you madame.
I have devoted half of the week to myself
My wife and I would like to thank and welcome you to the Hasan Gulesci Sea Shell Collection.
[applause; song fades in]
Our story begins in 1961.
The year I married Gulsen, we collected a few shells from the shores of a southern Turkish village.
Much later did I learn that the scientific name of these shells was Muricidae.
It has been 40 years since my first work day at the Sabanci Group.
This picture was taken in 1961, at a boiler room in Adana.
I am pictured with Necdet. Look at how young I am! I even got a bit of hair...
Effective on 31.07.2000, I am leaving my post as CEO.
For a few years, my wife and I have been thinking about what would happen to the collection after we pass away.
After a while, we came to consider donating my collection to the Maritime Museum.
Bodrum's Mayor got excited and came to visit me.
With the Mayor's vision, my collection has become what you shall see on the upper floor.
I would like to thank him from the bottom of my heart.
We asked for the hand of Mr. Gulesci's daughter: the sea shells.
Mr. Gulesci, your daughter is in good hands.
Thank you.
Will you put the guest book later?
Shells are just like people... They have families.
There are about 400 different families.
Under these families, there are about 120.000 species.
All species have names, just like my daughters do.
We would like to have significant representation from as many families as possible.
I have specialized in 2 families:
Conidae and Cyprae.
I've made a calculation, I told Sakip Sabanci.
I have spent more time with you than I have with my wife!
"Why? Have you grown tired of seeing me??"
He asked me. No, I said. Excuse me. I just said that to express how much time we have spent together.
We laughed...
I never buy a shell when there is a living mollusk in it.
I also do not approve of collectors who encourage the mollusk's ***.
Bodrum has become a cross-roads of cultures.
This museum must be publicized to our tourists.
I would like to invite every single tourist who visits Bodrum to stop by the Maritime Museum.
Here is my philosophy of life...
One, you devote your time to your work...
Two, you spend time with your family...
Three, one must be passionate about a hobby...
I firmly believe that success cannot be one-sided...
