Hello...
As we all know, these have been very difficult times for millions of people
on Long Island,
and of course, a key part of Nassau Community College's mission
is to provide an accessible, high-quality education for students
and Doctor Reiser will be giving you more information on how we have been able to
deliver the services in the face of Hurricane Sandy.
However,
I would like also to be take an opportunity to briefly share with you the efforts
that Nassau Community College
has been taking to fill another component of our mission
in the aftermath of Sandy:
service to our Long Island community.
the College is currently the host site for the largest evacuation center in Nassau county
located in our Physical Education building,
the shelter is being administered by the
Red Cross.
The College is also the host of the special medical needs shelter that is being
administered by Nassau County
and is located in our College Center building.
Finally, the College is the host
in our College Union building to several agencies
of the Federal Government including the Federal Emergency Management Agency,
the Small Businesses Administration Association,
and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Now Dr. Reiser will describe how the College has been meeting
students during this difficult time.
The faculty was so happy
to welcome our students back to campus this week
and to get down to the business of teaching our students and providing a
high quality education.
We are very mindful of the multitude
of problems our students are facing.
many of them have lost cars possessions and even their textbooks and notebooks
the faculty has made numerous accommodations
in and out of the classroom
to be sensitive and to serve our students' needs
while at the same time maintaining academic integrity.
This is indeed a difficult time for Nassau Community College.
But working hand-to-hand, as yet one more community on Long Island
effected by Hurricane Sandy,
we will persevere, we will succeed, and we will move forward together.
We want you to know
that Nassau cares.
