How to Keep a Christmas Tree from Shedding. Don't let your holiday season get cut short
by a shedding tree. Practice good shopping and care techniques to keep your tree healthy.
You will need Right species Fresh tree Saw Water Good location and small lights. Step
1. Decide which type of tree you want. Different species hold needles for different lengths
of time. Balsam and Fraser firs feature good needle retention, blue spruce will drop needles
in a warm room, and Scotch pines will hold on to their needles for about four weeks.
Step 2. Choose a fresh tree if you're not cutting one down yourself. Ask the seller
whether the trees are delivered once at the beginning of the season or if they're delivered
multiple times throughout the selling season. Shop for your tree early in the selling season
to ensure a fresh tree. Step 3. Run a branch through your hand and feel the tree. The needles
should be flexible and not fall off. Step 4. Hold the tree a few inches off the ground
and drop it on its butt end. While a few inner, brown needles should fall off, few green needles
should drop. Step 5. Use the saw to cut an inch from the butt end of the tree and put
it in water immediately when you get home. Cutting the end will allow for water intake,
keeping your tree fresher longer. Step 6. Don't set up your tree by heat vents, radiators,
or windows that get a lot of direct sunlight. Heat will dry out your tree and cause it to
shed. Step 7. Decorate your tree with small Christmas lights that give off as little heat
as possible. With the proper care, your Christmas tree will remain beautiful throughout the
holiday season. Did you know It takes an average of seven to 10 years for a Christmas tree
to mature.
