SON>>I just thought that it was a little, you know-- it's near the freeway, and I don't
want to put up with all that noise.
FATHER>> Yeah, it was a little bit noisy. The location was good though, you've gotta
admit. It was a good location, but this place ahhh..
SON>> I like the layout, isn't it cool? I think that like, this kitchen, you know, we've
got running water...all right! Oh good, it looks good.
It's clean; that's nice. Dad, hey, there's this bar
so I could serve cocktails to friends. FATHER>> Yeah, food is good.
SON>> Yeah, it's got a nice refrigerator, check that out! You know what, I think this
is it. I think this is the place. Pool; it's got
the pool! FATHER>> It is a nice view.
SON>> I mean, the pool itself should be the deal.
FATHER>> Yeah, but what about affordability? What about the cost?
SON>> I can afford it. You know, I'm doing pretty good hours at the grocery store now,
you know, and I mean, the rent, the rent's pretty cheap.
FATHER>> Well your income is good, and the rent is pretty affordable, I'll admit that,
but there were some other costs in here that uh... you might have to
consider. Well, first of all, I was reading through this rental
contract and shows that you have to make a uh.. you have to put down a security deposit.
SON>> What's that? FATHER>> Well, a security deposit is just
to ensure that in case there's any damange to the apartment when
you move out, they have enough money to cover that. You'll get it back if you keep the place
nice and tidy, but they always require that upfront.
Then you've got the application fee, that's also in the contract
as well. SON>> Man, that better be it. I'm --
FATHER>> Well, there are a few other expenses because... you know...
SON>> There's more? FATHER>> Well, just like at home, we have
to pay electricity, we have to pay for water, we have to pay for heat,
and the same things apply here. So you're gonna have to pay for heat, water, electricity...
I mean, it'd be pretty bad if you didn't have any lights,
water or heat. SON>> I thought that was just, that everybody
go that. FATHER>> Nooooo, no, no, no. So you're going
to have to pay for those things, too. SON>> K.
FATHER>> You do have the money for the uh... for the deposit, right?
SON>> ...Yeah... FATHER>> Okay. Well then that shouldn't be
any problem, you can put that money aside. And then you just need to
sit down and go through a budget. That's pretty easy, you've done that before, right?
SON>> No. FATHER>> No?
SON>> I don't know what to do, I'm sorry, this is... wow. Dad, I did not know all of
this. FATHER>> Hey, it's okay, though. You can still
live here and I think you can afford it, you just need to ahead and
sit down with a budget. You've got the job, you've got great hours. So, I tell you what
I'll do: I'll sit down with you and we can go through the budget, and it'll
be really easy. SON>> I mean, it's funny. When I was a kid
I just thought it would be simple: you're on your own kind of thing, you
know? FATHER>> It's all part of growing up, and
you're doing a good job. SON>> Thanks, Dad.
FATHER>> So here's what you can do: I'll help you budget, but you've gotta make me a deal.
SON>> Okay. FATHER>> On move-in day, no heavy lifting
for Dad, okay? SON>> No, don't worry, I've got you.
FATHER>> Alright, good job.
