Now I am working on my Ph.D. at Harvard Medical School.
This is the lab that I'm doing the research for my dissertation,
which is the bulk of my Ph.D. program.
We're interested in this one specific protein
that's involved in sensing the cellular environment.
It can tell a cell to grow.
So this has become a problem in all sorts diseases,
but namely cancer.
I have a passion both for science and a passion for running.
In my second year at UVM,
I started working in a lab in the biology department.
If you're in the sciences,
it has a really, really strong science background.
There's a medical school there, so there's tons of labs.
There's tons of opportunities to get involved in research.
All the facility and professors are extremely knowledgeable
about so many different subjects,
that I think it's a great place to go, for that reason.
I studied recreation management at UVM.
I'm a writer and an editor,
so that means I'm creating our content
and I'm both working with contributors
on them submitting content to the magazine.
Kind of involved in the process
from the very beginning to the very end,
everything from thinking up the ideas
of what we want the magazine to look like,
all the way to final proofing and fact-checking,
right before it goes to the printer.
Yeah, I was just adding it up the other day,
and I think I've been on nineteen trips or so,
through my work,
whether it's for the ski test that we run each year,
or a trade show, or an assignment for the magazine.
I wouldn't have gotten involved at Backcountry Magazine
if it weren't for having to do that internship.
That was something that was required in my major.
There were, maybe, a half-dozen professors.
They are really engaged in their subject matter,
and they kind of motivate you to be more involved.
I learned so much through my whole four years,
whether I was in a classroom
or in the mountains just having fun.
The Career Services organizations on campus
really do a great job of bringing in
some of the world's leading companies on campus, to do recruiting.
And GE's one of them.
I sat down with GE in October of my senior year.
I was offered a full-time job.
I got hired-it can happen!
Falling in love with accounting might be hard for some people.
I think that's one of the things I love
about finance and accounting, is numbers don't lie.
The professors-they bring their lives into the classroom,
and what their passions are within their research.
Yeah, basketball's a passion for me,
because, first of all, I love competition.
There's really nothing like a game day.
Right-hand dribble, dumps it down low to Shafter,
right block off the glass for two!
They have these organizations come onto campus,
and then you can sit down with them
and have these interviews with them-
and that's exactly how I was hired for GE.
Absolutely, I'm so glad I chose UVM.
UVM is a great place to go.
Best time of my life.
